I was welding with some flux cored wire last week and I switched over to solid wire today for a job that has to be done for tomorrow. I was getting some contamination in my welds and after a while it went away. I noticed the solid wire had a darkish film on it after it went through the welder but not on the spool. When the solid wire went through the gun I could take my hand and wipe off a darkish film from the wire. I was wondering if the flux cored wire is leaving some kind of yuk inside the liner. I'm thinking it's best to have one welder for flux cored and one for solid wire.Might be a good excuse to go buy a new Iron Man, I'll have to discuss this with the book keeper (wife).Anyone else have this experience.
Reply:I have never used these but i believe they are made for exactly what you are dealing with. http://www.airgas.com/browse/product...20&fo_s=gplaus
Reply:Yup. You put one between the spool and the drive rolls. School used 2, adding one between the drive rolls and the liner/hoseMillerMatic 252Miller Xtreme 625Miller Digital Elite
Reply:One can also use the simple bright orange hearing protection earplugs in lieu of those pads.  Just poke a hole in one with the wire and place it in line just prior to the entrance into the mig hose.  They really filter or wipe off dirt from the wire, before contaminating the liner. Reply:What a great tip!  I buy these in bulk, and always have some on hand.  I do have the proper wipes but will give this a go when they are gone.  Thanks! Reply:Or just blow out the liner with compressed air after about every 20lbs of wire run through it.  The stuff that actually clogs the liner is usually a combination of lube and metal flakes from the wire.  You'll find it's really not a big deal"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
