Our 2000 gallon water tank looked like a sprinkler going down the road. I was even funnier looking back after sitting at a red light. So the boss told me to patch it. I told him we are talking MAJOR surgery. And right away, he agreed, we need a new tank. So my job for today, among many others, was to separate thi tank from the roll off frame. I used my Arcair, and it was fun!!! I burned 1/4" carbons at #5 on the big dial."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:After I gouged all the weld out, I dropped it on the ground and use a Bobcat to lift and roll it on its side. It went as smooth as I was hoping. Now we are getting a new plastic tank. The boss wanted to use the old frame, but I mentioned we should just make a dumpster box out of it and start from scratch with much heavier frame work. This frame is pretty beat, and the new tank will be 3000 gallons. Much more weight, sitting on three rollers on each side, literally BOUNCING, down our lovely hellinois roads."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:That old tank would make a really nice, roomy bar-b-que grille.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Reason I asked about the baffles is I think you said 3,000 gallons, and if your boss grabbed some stationary farm tank to adapt on there you could find it really is a problem when you get up to speed or make a turn with a 3/4 or 1/2 full tank. A lot of weight to get moving around and becomes hard to manage. If you know about all that I apologize but some don't."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Update, and I hope I don't get flamed, just did what the boss wanted!I welded 3/4" grade 8 bolts to the edge of the steel flatbed, which is angle. I used 5/32", 7018 @ 2 1/2 on the knob. The funny part is, I had asked him for the dimensions of the tank, when he ordered it. I was going to post on here to see about placement. Now I never did this before, so I took a guess and put the 3rd strap (black steel bar/band that hold it down) directly over the center of the drive tandem. He said, "perfect, go with it". Well it was wrong. We can now only legally run with 2100 or 2200 gallons, insted of the 2750. When I filled it up and went across the street to scale, I was 40,000 exactly on the drives, and 13,500 on the steers. I really wanted to be able to fill it up because that means less trips back to the shop. And he does not want me to move the tank. At least when we are on a big job, filling off the hydrants, we can fill it up all the way."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:why not just put the bolts through the frame instead of welding it?There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Don't like that way of mounting a tank, welding to a bolt head and depending it to hold the weight of that water sloshing around sounds like a recipe for disaster. Welding to a gr8 bolt makes it a gr??? something or other.Like TH said above, make or purchase a proper steel strap that has the bolt pivot on the end like what is used on a fuel saddle tank. Go down thru the side angle using doublers on the bottm and locknuts and flatwashers all gr8 and NO LOCKWASERS, them things are crap. The only time they're any good is when the bolt comes loose and by then it's tool late.Put some conveyor belting under the tank also, it'll lessen the change of it wanting to move around....Mike
Reply:I said to just burn holes with the torch. At first he wanted me to drill them, and then came up with this. Like I said, I followed directions, and I need my job. As far as the rubber goes, it would have been nice, but we didn't have any. And the surface was kinda rough, so I think once it wears into the plastic, it willhelp to a certain extent. In other words, I was not working with new, smooth steel."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I'm sorry. but you, as the weldor, need to be able to stand up to your boss and say, that's not a safe way to do it. You aren't just looking out for your job in that case. You're looking out for his business. There are quick ways, cheap ways, and right ways. You can only have two at the same time. and it's ok to stand up for you beleifs. If he says to do it his way anyway, hand the job off to someone else. If it fails, you will bet your a$$ that you boss will pull you under the bus with him. There are no problems. Reply:Once those tanks are full they really don't want to come off the truck, the hold down bands are probably doing as much holding the empty tank from blowing off as when holding the full tank from sliding.  As long as you fill the tank the whole way full the sloshing won't be bad.  I'm not sure you could roll that tank off the truck when full in normal driving without hold downs even if you wanted to.
