Reply:Jim... what about those small fire-proof safes that are sold by Business Depot; I've seen those go on safe for like 1/2 price.  Electronic combination lock and key back up.  Hard to beat.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:I got a piece of 12"X12"X12" square tubing 1/4" thick from the scrapyard. I put a plate on bottom and welded it up. I made the top hinged with a latch on the inside. I then put an old post office door (with the Alphabetical combination locks) on it. Open the post office door and with your fingers reach inside and open the entire top. Paint it however you want. Gave it to my kid and he has it 1/2 full of dimes as the start of his yet unborn daughters college fund.It is great for some things but not really valuable things due to the weakness of the door. But it is good for medium to low value items.
Reply:A safe you say......what's that.....make one out of 1/2" thick steel plate, then add a door with the hinges concealed on the inside, (it only has to open outwards), add a lock mechanism to the inside with the key hole outside...long key etc......then drill some 1"holes in the bottom at the corners.Next bolt it down to the floor in a room you don't use much...that's it.Put all you valuables, money, jewellery etc in a cardboard box and leave them on top of the fridge....anyone breaklng in will concentrate on the "safe", which only has a few house bricks in it for appearance...paint them gold colour for effect etc and add some ""money"" you photocopied. Now you add an alarm, the silent type, so that when the intruders have a go at the safe and wrench it from the floor boards the alarm will trigger and send a message to the local cop shop.....the thieves will get away and get caught off the premises with the "safe: but you valuable will remain.Next make another one when the first one gets stolen, and do the same again.Just making the safe will give you something to do which is why you bought that welder in the first place....you can claim the cost of the stolen safe on your insurance, but your valuables, which in most cases would be personal jewellery documents, cash and/or family heirlooms , are irreplaceable. The process is known as "Hiding in plain sight".Ian
Reply:You can often find used safes fairly cheap. I was just looking at an old 2'x2'x2' safe at a consignment shop the other day for $100. Safe shops often have loads of used safes they buy or take in on upgrade, or they know who to contact to get one. True the older ones aren't as fire resistant or tamper proof as newer ones, but for the average user you are only really using it as a deterrent to slow thieves down, or protect valuable papers in the event of a small fire..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Heard of someone who set a safe horizontally into a floor with concrete.  The idea was to cover it with a rug or something.  Then he discovered that the tumbler (or whatever) lock would only work with the safe sitting upright.  Fail.See if you can get a bargain on a steel wood stove.  Set it up to look real but add a concealed locking mechanism.Last edited by Oldendum; 09-16-2012 at 10:57 AM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Hiding it in plain site is the best idea of all......If you have chickens place a in ground safe in the floor of the chicken house, what better burglar alarm then the high strung chickens.....lol.....a friend of mine has a safe in the middle of his driveway right under where he parks his truck every night, slight oil leak on the dirt marks the spot.......people never think to look there.....the old dutch of the north east were masters of hiding thing in plain site..I know a fellow who hides a lot of money in old part cars on his property, nobody ever found it yet.good luck....If you see me running for no apparent reason, try to keep up:"Reality" What a concept!Miller Big 40 {1972} vintage, with 150 ft. of 000 leads, old Alaskan pipline welder.
Reply:I made a safe, it's an in ground job made from 1/4 plate. Concreted into the floor of shed converted into a spare room and then built in cupboards put over the top. You need to remove a drawer and a false floor to even find it.Too hard to explain the locking mechanism, might try and get a photo of the system I copied it from, which whilst simple is extremely difficult to penetrate.Pity I don't have anything valuable enough to really justify itCheers Andrew
Reply:Ive never had enough money to want a safe but I did want a way to keep important papers and old pictures safe from fire. all the old papers I rolled up and put in a stainless valcume thermos bottle. The old pictures i put between the pages of a large thick dictionary. bundled up with an encyclopedia on each side. Books nearly always survive a fire. however if they try to put the fire out with water they probably wont make it. Mac
