When welding what do you do with your phone? Do you listen to music? put it in a tool box? Sorry I'm new, haven't struck a arc yet still going through all the safety videos.
Reply:Welcome. As you are a new member I would point out the search feature available for digging up archived threads on numerous subjects. The search utility will be a big asset if you want to check specific topics as you learn new things. There are a few threads where cell phones are a topic. For my own personal level of dependency to a cell phone I could suggest that one use it to chip slag and shape metal much as you would a hammer. But that's just me and what you do is up to you. Check out the link below.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ighlight=phone
Reply:For the most part it is never on me while I am working. I have wrecked a bunch in the past and had the speakers clogged with steel dust, burnt, dropped, cracked or the worst dropped then stepped on. They're to expensive to replace these days so I just play it safe and go to the phone when I need it. I used to use it for music with Pandora while I was working till the bastards at Verizon made it seem like they gave me a killer deal on a new contract and phone, and when I was 2 weeks into the month I got a text saying I used up most of my data for the month. They never informed me that my new plan was on limited data and not unlimited anymore. Sucks, I really enjoyed Pandora.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I never work with my phone on me. I have made it a requirement in my shop that my guys can not have their phones on them when; welding, machining, or running anything that requires a amount of focus. Most guys put them in there toolbox, or in there welding cabinet. Yes, it may seem a little controlling, but when someone is running a $100,000 piece of equipment. It shouldn't matter what score is or who made the winning touch down. That being said, if, there is an emergency at home or anywhere that they need to be contacted ASAP. Most family and friends of the individual know to call ME or the shop "office", then we will "go tell" them. It's happened before, and it always work flawlessly (knock on wood). Anyway,... I usually keep my phone "close" to me, but never on me. Like *Weldermike* said, there easy to destroy.Proverbs 4:23My company welds.

Reply:Phone ? You guys are spoiled. We never had phones in the old days. Heck, when I was a kid, you could pick up the phone and listen to the neighbor; that was called a party line. No, not a bunch of people having a party doing a line. I leave mine in the truck, I do enough damage to tools let alone a costly cell phone. I agree with Buzzbox . Work is work, you need to focus on what you are doing instead of having earphones on , checking messages, email, weather, or stock reports. Heck you could have a jumpy partner and your cell phone ringer gives him a heart attack when it goes off. If you like a phone that much, become a telemarketer.

Reply:You have not struck an arc and your first question is about the cell phone?Forget that phone while you are working. Make calls at lunch time.If you are welding something that peoples lives depend on, do you want the welder listening to a cell phone?Last edited by Donald Branscom; 01-20-2014 at 02:39 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:Originally Posted by BD1Right you are MIKE ! I just got a iphone 5C . Holy shlt ! Beleive it or not, you can even make a phone call on it. I'm still playing with it but cannot believe the technology today. I had one of the first portable phones from the shop I was with. That was like the ''GET SMART'' guy one. The thing was huge and had a brief case to go with it. This phone has the facetime '' scary'' feature on it too. You get to see how really ugly the person is that you are talking to. This is awesome for on the job. You could call the shop and actually show them how they fked up by not looking at the job. Just pan the phone at the area in question. Truly amazing.
Reply:I wasn't saying I was going to be on it all the time, heck I'm 39 years old, I remember party lines, I was wondering about comfort, metal in the speaker etc. I plan on welding as much as possible while I'm in class, I'm to old to goof off and not "get it done".
Reply:Just because you have your phone on your doesn't mean you HAVE to use it either... seems like it gets assumed that if you have it you're going to use it...

Reply:Mine stays in the car now, not allowed in the shop. Previous place kept it in my toolbox, sometimes music playing mostly not.Originally Posted by weldermikeOr better yet just text me LOL! Three days of arguing are over in one word, NO!

Reply:I plug it in to the garage 'stereo' and play pandora. I know when someone's calling when the music stops. I won't hear it if its in my pocket. The screen is shattered and i can see electronic parts on one part of the screen. Maybe I should just leave it in the house..HH 210 MVPHypertherm Powermax 45300 sqft shop but it works.
Reply:I should add one thing about cordless land lines. If you keep one in the shop, put some electrical tape over the speaker. I've had to take mine apart to clean dust off the magnetic speaker because it wouldn't ring anymore. Hasn't happened to my cell though.HH 210 MVPHypertherm Powermax 45300 sqft shop but it works.
Reply:mine stays in my pocket, and is on all-the-time! I listen to Pandora when im by myself and know it wont disturb my work or others'. (rarely)my speakers get funny sounding from metal dust, but I have not had one fail ever. I have never broken a phone on the job, I do admit to taking it out when I know im about to get wet. (sure its drained down! tie it in man!)I guess im always paranoid about missing a life-changing phone-call. the trick is to train people to call during work-hours only in case of emergency. I take every single call, unless I just struck a rod when It starts ringing. my work calls me more than anybody else anyway, and I figure if they want to bug me on their dime, its fine with mebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:OK we was assigned lockers today, and I left mine in the locker. And this is my first time weldingThis picture was taken in the locker, I had to put the practice piece in there until Thursday (next class) so I snapped a quick picture.
Reply:I keep my galaxy s4 in my back pocket for structural and front pocket for tube.Always have in ear headphones in my ears. But OSHA aka the fun police have been getting on our cases for that.Understandable, I don't want to walk under some **** scaffolding and not hear it come down on me. But music is always in on shop jobs. (if permitted)
Reply:On the flip side of the self-employed coin, I rarely have my phone on me unless I'm expecting a call related to the job I'm on. This isn't the case most of the time, because my customer is usually nearby. If there's one thing I hate to see, it's someone whose time I'm paying for, jibbering on a phone. For the same reason, I don't want my customers to see me with a phone in my hand on their dime. I keep it in the truck, and just like my message says I will, I check it and return calls at lunch and on the way home.
Reply:Mine is in a leather holster that I made to clip on my belt and is always on. The leather really protects them from grinding and cutting sparks. I always have job prints and drawings on the phone. Much better than dealing with prints in the wind.
