I've had some concern over if I'm getting good fusion with my machine on 1/4 inch.  Please take a look and see what you think. The top is a cross section of a fillet weld, the bottom is a cross section of a lap weld. Thanks.Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

Reply:Id say no.  There's an incomplete fusion pin hole on the tee weld.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:I don't see the pin hole. I see where the vertical meets the horizontal? Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Reply:polish the welds on a belt sander or with a disk sander and mix up some drano with water, use a q-tip to apply it on the welded area. The drano should show the welded joint and the penetration of the weld.I kind of agree with scolliflower, looks like the weld didn't penetrate the tee joint well. You might try welding a smaller bead on the tee joint first to get better penetration and go over the first pass with a second pass.Last edited by kctgb; 03-18-2014 at 08:32 PM.
Reply:John and Kctgb, thanks.  Of course I had an amateur moment and did some more reading and I saw that the root must reach into the corner of the vertical and horizontal. Is this an angle issue? Meaning the ark is not aimed directly at the corner. If I do lay a bead in the corner, should I reduce the wire speed?Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

Reply:Thanks. I'm following the manufacturers recommendations for welder settings at least in terms of heat (volts). But I am running the wire speed slower (5 instead of 7) because I noticed my bead becoming too thick and I was worried that the larger puddle would result in less penetration.  Am I thinking wrong about wire speed? Could increasing wire speed increase penetration?Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Reply:Faster wire speed increases amps for a given voltage setting. However you also have to balance this with the material being deposited. If you lay down too much material, it rolls over and covers the base material before you get good penetration.Lap joint looks to have some issues in the root. Hard for me to tell exactly with the t joint, but I'm betting there are issues there as well. As mentioned you need to sand and etch the piece to get a better idea on how deep the weld fusion is..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:You might try the cursive E technique, it's an easy way to learn how to mig weld. If your using the settings on the machine try keeping the stick out short and move a little faster if the weld is starting to pile up on the base metal. If you use the cursive E technique go counter clockwise from left to right and clock wise from right to left.Jody at weldingtipsandtricks has a very good you tube video on the cursive E technique for mig welding.
