I had my students weld up this Discada for me over the last two weeks. They did a great job and I promised I would cook for them in it next week. I figured I had better get it seasoned so nothing sticks to it first. Stopped by my local butcher and he was trimming up some pork shoulders so he gave me a big bag-o-porkfat to fry up in the pan. It worked great and we are ready to roll next week. All of the welding and forming was done by a group of high school juniors, I think they did great! Attached Images
Reply:Looks good from a distance. It appears they were running a little cold and with too fast of travel speed as well.
Reply:Very nice!!!One side has a rectangle, could you tell me about it? Thanks in advance for you replyMauricio
Reply:Discada, huh? Never heard of that, so I did a Google rampage. Now I gotta make me one of those! Along with a Dutch oven, it seems like perfect camping cookware. Is that paint on the square part? If so, you might want to burn that off before you do a lot of cooking.Tim
Reply:You're right, they did a good job, looks great!I thought that discada's were made from old plow (or harrow?) discs. Seems like one of the Yuma boyz made one but the legs did not want to stay welded to it! Question: where did you get those handles? I seem to have to buy and sacrifice a chipper hammer every time I want a handle like that!
Reply:The seasoning went well. The wife made me wash the clothes I was wearing immediatley upon entering the house! timrb- it is some tough mill scale that we should have got off before we weolded it up. Should only add a little iron flavor nothing more harmful!Fabn4fun- source for handles is this websitehttp://www.kck.com/bbq_pit_spring_ha...ood_stove.htmlgood service and good prices.
Reply:Very cool. I like the tortilla warmer on the side. What is the ring around the edge, looks like 1/8" x 1 flat bar? What process welding did the kids use? How thick is the tortilla warmer plate.Sorry for all the questions, I have made 2 of these for friends, and am thinking about mine, before summer and outdoor cooking season starts for me, and I really like the ammenities you added. Are there any food issues with the welds on the inside of the disc? Thanks,Mike
Reply:That's slick. Thanks for posting. If you ever want to play with the heat, CGA-510 acetylene regulators fit BBQ LP jugs.
Reply:It is 1" by3/16" that we rolled on our ring roller, the plate is 3/16" also, it matches the disc thickness. It all heats really evenly so it is easy to control the heat. If making anothe one I would probably not weld the inside just for looks sake. I think that it will clean up OK and shouldn't be any problem with food issues. The kids used our Miller 252 with .035 wire and C25 gas.
Reply:Thanks. It's a good build, and good for you teaching kids how to do it.
Reply:When I was making mine I had a heck of a time getting the MIG to work... Some REAL welder here took pity on me and noted that the disc steel is very different from mild steel. ok then... The handles are beefy, I like that, keep those fingers kooool.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=46243Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:Looks great! Presumably that rectangle bit on the side is to remove the cooked goods from heat while the uncooked goods finish? I'll bet the goodies that thing cooks taste great!

For a "cooker" like this, does it really matter if the welds were slightly cold or hot? Give 'em a break man. We're talk'n 16 & 17 year olds! I say those kids did a fantastic job! :d

Reply:Looks good fun to let them cook on. We used old 14 and 18 inch plow disk with used horseshoes for handles. Looks like turkey fryer propane set up. Made fire pot for south Texas deer camp. Uses charcoal or small wood. Take 1/2 to3/4 inch steel plate 16 inch square use 10 -14 inch pipe 16 inch tall cut scallops 1/2inch by 1inch deep on edge top and bottomweld pipe to plate. Fill with charcoal let get hot start cooking.
Reply:Bob- I talked to the kids and they said that they appreciate your constructive criticism, but your not invited over for fajitas on Tuesday. We will try to get a few pics of what you are going to be missing. Thanks everybody else for your support, I am going to pass it on to the students.
Reply:Gave it a test run tonight with some fajita's, they turned out great! Attached Images

Reply:Uncharacteristically, I actually did something that I said I was going to do--namely build one of these things. After Googling a bit, I decided I like the simplicity of the discadas that are on legs so you can build a little fire underneath. I went down to the local salvage yard, bought an old disc, and cleaned it up:I had to cut a plug for the center hole. I know what you're thinking, and you're wrong. That hole really was put there by some drunk guy with a torch.Welded the plug. It don't matter--most of it is going to get ground off anyway. There's an equally ugly weld on the bottom.Add some handles and legs. Yes, I know rebar is cheesy, but I wanted to use what I had laying around. I'd wager the first discada builder did exactly the same thing. Anyway, total cost: $8.50 plus tax for the disc. Fajitas tonight.Tim
Reply:I'll tell you what, you guys all get together and cook up whatever you like and I'll come over to eat and judge the vittles when you're all done. Looks to me like cool stuff any way you slice it. Nice, thanks for sharing, now if I can just get the drool off of my keyboard! Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Okay, did some cooking. Everything I make starts with onions.Brown some chicken...Add some color...Mix it all up, add some seasoning, bring on the tortillas...I just love this thing. Very, very easy to cook on.TimTim,How did you season your discada? Reply:To season it I built a fire under it and repeatedly wiped it down with olive oil after it got hot. Honestly, I don't know if that's the correct method, but nothing stuck when I cooked on it, so... I doubt that true seasoning, like you would do with a cast iron Dutch oven, is really necessary since you are frying everything, and it will kind of self-season with use. YMMV After this morning's cleanup I did give it another coat of oil just because the thing rusts if you look at it hard. Tim

Reply:those look really great! and i agree....give the kids a break! i have had an old disc on my cross country rig for a long time now that an old Romanian friend turned me on to....i don't have any handles (i use a crescent if i need to move it) or legs (i improvise each time i use mine as far as legs/base go sometimes a scrap of pipe or rocks have been used) in my situation it works best not to have the added accoutrements for stowing purposes....i also did not plug any of the holes it has as it kind of gives you a nice semi smoked finish to your foods....the one i have is over 100yrs old off an old horse drawn that i fully re-purposed into tables and other farm-craft things for a friends ranch.
Reply:ifallswelder, thanks for the example. I've wanted to build one for a while now and your's looks like what I want. Started on mine last night. Attached Images

Reply:How bout some recipes to go with this build thread?
Reply:That set your students made are top notch, a lifetime cooker by the way, these don't wear outRecipes, hmm ok. We can do that. I'll start taking a pic or two of various meals. 1. Breakfast burrito ~ Bacon, eggs, potatoes, sometimes beans and Green chiles, Jalepenos or Hatch. Use the larger flour tortillas, warm a bit and roll 'em up. 2. Carnitas ~ Pulled pork but NOT BBQ sause, go with a green sausa, pretty hot. Beans if you have to. mmm good.3. Bananas fried up with peanut butter on Texas toasted bread or tortilla. Might? be fattening.4. Fish and lime, Chicken and lime, Cabrito and lime. well, darned near anything and lime. 5. Quesadillas ~ Flour tortilla crisped a bit and shredded cheese, looks pizza like and YES on the chiles and avacados.. that oughta hold ya'. Notes: always use chiles, always use good olive il and roll 'em up, plates are optional. y tome Cervesa se puede.Last edited by PapaLion; 09-24-2012 at 07:46 AM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools |
