Needed a small, portable charcoal BBQ for this weekend. Some scrap 12" sch 40 pipe, 1/4" plate, 2" angle, 3/4" square tube, and some stainless expanded sheet left over from a paying BBQ job. A couple hours, and there you have an indestructible hibachi grill.Weights about 25 or 30 lbs. Will probably weld a mount for a receiver hitch that I can bolt on if I want to take it with my on my rig someday. Will paint it with some high temp black once I've fired it once and made sure the vent holes I drilled in the top and bottom are big enough. Reply:Very cool!Hard to tell but I'm guessing 1/2 holes on the lid, I'd go with larger holes with some sort of adjustable cap. Thinking 1" holes with a piece of 1" flat 1/8 with a center pivot bolt to act as a baffle. just my .02Some blue machinesSome red machineslots of heavy steel
Reply:Yep, the 1/2 holes don't allow enough air flow with the lid on or when first lighting the grill. I'll have to add some more holes to the bottom, or maybe some slots on the sides, below the firegrate. Thanks for the baffle suggestion. I've got some more scrap that I can use to fab some kind of moveable cover for the vents.By the way, grill is suitable for 2 chicken breasts, 3 pork chops, 4 hamburgers, or a package of brats.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector |
