How much do welders make if they cant read blueprints?I'm having a really hard time with blueprint reading, but I'm not going to drop the course. I'm going to push through.
Reply:Depends on the job. Some jobs you need to be able to read blue prints, some jobs you don't.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Most jobs that I get involved with, I don't have to read a great deal of the prints. There are usually several details in the prints that concern me. On big jobs, I have a friend of mine go through them, as that is what he does all day long, just to make sure I dont bite off more than I can chew. It can  be a chore going through them, but it gets better with time.
Reply:I've met a few pipeliners who make some big dollars that couldn't read a tape let alone read a print lol
Reply:when i worked high rise construction the welders never came in contact with blueprints and didn't make the decisions of what went where. i'm at my present location over 25 years and worked off prints maybe twice.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:IMNSHO it's an absolute necessity if you're going to have a business and work on public buildings. Stairs, handrails, bar joists etc gotta be dead nuts code and match the drawing. As far as a skill sought out by employers you could be the guy dealing with the engineers and bidding. That can go both ways.Fun or frustrating since some "engineers" aren't capable of operating a garden hose.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:What use to pi$$ me off to no end was to have guys you could not trust with a tape measure, let alone a print. But, if their pay check was short $.25-cents Friday night, all of a sudden they turned into mathematicians! Reply:Thanks for the responses everyone. The main problem I'm having is trying to determine the thickness from the width. My teacher gave us a paper with 3 different views for a plan to build a saw horse pipe. I'm having a hard time telling the difference between thickness and width. Don't get me wrong, I would love to know how to read blueprints. I guess I just hit a temporary obstacle.
Reply:You won't notice it now, but every engineer has his style of drawing prints. Also keep in mind on bigger projects the specification book will make things a lot clearer.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:There are only 3 things I need from a blueprint: weld size, location, and type. At least at my job that's all I need. And of course the job description said "Must be able to read blueprints.".Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life
Reply:I highly suggest you learn to read prints. I had to read and understand a detailed print today at work. Not knowing how to interpret shop drawings and prints is not good in the structural  steel industry. Keep at it and you will pick it up. Reply:In my experience steel fabricators such as myself did the print reading layout and tacking.  In larger shops I have worked in, fabricators made 16 and hour and welders 14.  At the end of my career welders were making 24 and I was 28 and change.  In smaller shops welders were expected to read prints and fabricators were expected to weld.  Even in smaller shops with less than say ten people the people who could read prints made top rate.  In some georgraphic areas we are called "fitters".  As I was told many years ago:  "There is a job for every welder."  Every welding job is different.

Reply:my boss stopped in the weld shop today and said he had a rush order for a racing trailer we had to get done asap. Told us to hang tight while he ran back to the store to get the plans. I'm thinkin alright bout time we have plans to go on rather then guessing and hoping its right. He shows back up with a piece of notebook paper that either he or the customer drew a crude race car trailer on with a marker, probably a Crayola washable kind at that.93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811

Reply:How about as builts from an electrical contractor in crayon? It's been 7 years and I am still at a loss for words when I stumble across them in the files.

Reply:To provide you with the simplest possible answer without all the anecdotal BS. More than welders that don't know how to read them.
Reply:I have no choice in my situation..I MUST go by the print on 90% of what I do..One thing to remember...Even if you know the print is wrong..and believe me they are lot's of times..If you can't ask the engineer...boss..whoever for a revision?Just make it to the print..weld it where they want because in the end...YOU are correct. You made exactly what they want even if it's wrong. And that's all that matters. You went by the print.and they can't argue with that....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Last job I worked at I got hired on as a welder..  When they realized I could read prints all I did was fit up for the other welders who couldn't read a tape...  To me you should know both opens up more job opportunities.  Do I like fitting ?  Hell no.  Do I like structural ?  Nope hate it.Journeyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut sawin my area, from the interviews I've had with shop foremen, if you can't read blueprints they will NOT hire you.I think this is why blueprint reading is a big part of foundation welding course in BC.
