Reply:Being an oxygen tank, Im guessing it's made for very high pressure, maybe in the 200 bar range like a welding oxygen tank? Then I would feel fine using it for a compressed air system with the "low" pressures we have in ordinary garage compressors. Perhaps a portable tank you fill with your ordinaly garage compressor, and then easily can carry/transport to whereever you need a bit of air to pump a tire, clean some dust off, or something like that. Good when you need some compressed air, but not so much it's worth the trouble of moving the compressor or whatever you need the air for.
Reply:I've never flown an aircraft where we had them, however I remember there was quite a rack on the KC-135's we used to fly on for base visits. I don't believe they are rated at the 3000 PSI as the small bottles are like you'd find in an ejection seat or anything like that. If I remember correctly, they were around ~450 psi. So shop air would not be a problem.
Reply:How big is it?  Judging from the newspaper, I'm guessing 10 to 15 gallons.Might make a nice gas tank for somebody's hotrod.Or a small gas grill or bbq pit.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I have one I've been using for a portable air tank for 20 yrs and I trust it more than any mild steel tank.                                                MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:its a model p-1 military oxygen tank rated at 300psi working pressure. all stainless construction. the spiral bands are reinforcement to restrain shrapnel if it were to be hit in combat. also had a much rarer big brother designated r-1 which was about 8 times the volume. p-1 tanks are readily available at surplus outlets.
Reply:Our calibration lab used those same tanks to take air samples from our missile grade compressed air systems. They never had any explode, and they regularly saw 120 psi. Reply:fill it with 1/4 air and 3/4 water, pressurize it, get on it like a pissed off bull , hold on and release the back valve.  You need a 2" valve to really make this fun.  Now hold on tight and have your ex friend, soon to be enemy open the valve.  If I had the shop door open I would have made it a much longer way, instead, I have two dents in the door.  One from the tank, and the second from me. It's all about making memories! Oh, I won't be doing that again, but it was a memory (don't remember all of it of course).  After that we came up with some more formal rules about after hour beer and shop use. They did something like that on mythbusters and said it wouldn't work, but I'm here to tell you.....it works!!

Reply:I found one at my MIL's that looks EXACTLY like that except it is aluminum and had been turned into a portable air tank. I have been meaning to decomission it but every time I get there it slips my mind.I probably need to make this a priority.jrw159
