I was on the museum Midway this week and took some photos of their welding shop on board. Unfortunately, the shop is blocked by two doors and people are not allowed inside. The photos are from the open "half doors" and these are the best I could take. There really wasn't much left as far as tools, but there was one very old old Miller (while in color) in the shop. The shop itself was very small, as to be expected on board a ship. I still thought it was very cool. Reply:Thanks for taking the time to post those. Very interesting.  I wonder why the walls and ceiling are painted black? As far as the "do not enter"....If discovered inside, I think you could simply mention that you are not only a member of the Welding Web Forum, but that you are a Welding Web Foreman, to boot!TxDoc's Photos Lincoln SP175 PlusLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln 250 LX Spool Gun Lincoln Precision Tig 225 Hypertherm 600 KMG 2x72 Belt GrinderBaldor 812RE Grinder

Reply:There were actually two welding shops on the Midway. It was the last of the battle class carriers, meaning that all ranks, shops and sleeping quarters were split with one of each in the front of the ship and the other in the aft of the ship. That way a direct hit couldn't take out all the weldors, boiler makers or any other rank. I was on the USS Osbourne escorting the Midway on her last tour to Vietnam.
Reply:Wow, those were really tight quarters to be doing much welding.  I just hope those guys had lots of ventilation in the shop.

Reply:Years ago I worked with a retired Navy welder,  he always said area was painter flat black to reduce the reflection.
Reply:Cool photos, I got to visit the Midway and the Forestall when they visited New Orleans for Mardi Gras.  I have also toured the Enterprise, Nautilus (submarine), Missouri (battleship), Alabama (battleship) and USS Kidd (destroyer).ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
Reply:I'm surprised that it not eqiped with mg type welders. I also see that they pull the hinge pins (on the door) a lot so I presume somone lost the door key. Also a ship that old shouldn't be that pollitically correct, (it has too many hazzard zones) should it?Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few.
