Building dock ramps 3/16 wall aluminum sq tube, dragging TIG torch and peddle around I think will be a pain. Time to pull the trigger (pun intended) on MIG unit and spool gun.I like the idea of a portable unit 115/230V and know that you are limited on the 115v but I think that I would be ok with that in a pinch. For my needs I'm looking at that Hobart 210MVP w/spool runner 100, or the Miller MM211 w/spoolmate 100.I'm leaning towards the Hobart seems to have a little better duty cycle w/spool gun, and the Miller auto set I question because it seems that I have heard some negative reviews. Note sure about the warranty on the Miller, but seems to be good on the Hobart.I've hand no complaints on my miller 250 Syncrowave DXI need to do some thing in the next day or two any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Karl

Reply:I don't think it's actually true that Miller 'makes' Hobarts. Both companies are owned by Illinois Tool Works. There are some peripheral Miller parts used in Hobarts, but I believed each company manufactures its machines in separate facilities and has its own management and the like.I've owned (and liked) both.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Miller owns Hobart, like Hobart owns Miller. Been that way since the Sale to ITW. 210 is made in Troy, Ohio the last time I checked. Reply:To me the Auto Set is a marketing gimmick for the newer welder. I've only used it once on a machine and personally I just set the machine manually for the way I prefer to weld. I don't believe from what I remember that it will work for alum, so you would be setting manually anyways.I honestly haven't looked close enough at the Hobart to form any opinion on it in detail vs the MM211. In general Hobart units usually are slightly under or equal to their Miller counter parts. I don't think I've seen one of the ITW Hobart Handlers that's actually "better" in output to a comparable Miller. Not that I'm knocking Hobarts, I think they are usually a good deal for the money. It's just that it seams Miller usually has the slightly better unit for some reason, and I'm guessing it's a deliberate marketing plan. Obviously I like Miller products, just afraid the auto-set might be something else to cause problems. I might add nobody has addressed this issue, good or bad. From the looks of your equipment doesn't look like you are a big Miller proponent.

The MM180 I ran for a bit on alum pretty much needed to be run maxed out to do 1/8" alum. My guess is the MM211 or the Hobart will need to be run almost at max to do a good job on 3/16" alum. and you will not get the output on 115v power. If you simply mean that from time to time you could use it on steel 1/8" and less when the situation calls for it, then yes that those machines would work for that.

Reply:As far as the autoset goes on the MM211. Is it pretty close voltage vs. wirespeed? So if I want to use autoset but want to go hotter, I just up the thickness.
