Looking for ideas of stuff to make and sale for fairly cheap. Any ideas would be great. Thinking about fireplace grates.
Reply:There has been previous threads over the past couple of years along the same lines.Easiest is to use the SEARCH function in the upper right of the screen, dig around as they take a while to pull up.I find some of the simplest things are posted by those guys tend to sell well at fleamarkets and craft shows.I watched a guy years ago making 3 foot cranes(birds) out of flats and rounds and squirt a little cheap paint on them.They sold $35 to $55 seven years ago. People were buying them at the rate of 2 to 3 an hour.You know "Yard Art"!Good Luck!

Reply:building things is the easy part selling it is the problem, unless you all ready have a market for some thing, it is one thing to build some thing and hope to sell it if you don't need the money, but if you need to move product, one needs a proven market and maybe even a sales department, to move the product, If you have a customer base, and coming to you for products or repairs it will be hard, it is possible to go to some retailers possibly chain stores and if they have some product that is seasonal (like bbq grills),   it might be possible to get an in building some thing better or cheaper to them, but I think once you discover what they pay wholesale, you will have a hard time competing,   I have built cabinets for a time custom units, at first I tried to compete with the manufactured units,   there will always be some place cheaper, and so I moved to the high end side, again being a small shop and no in a good location, very hard to get the special materials (do to low quintiles) very hard to do,  so unless there were some special requirements by building one of a kind  units, special custom turnings on the some parts and leaded glass in the doors, it can be done but not over night,  try to find another job, is my advice, my son was trying to come up with some ideas  and I suggested the ATV bale movers, http://www.goodecattle.com/sale.htm were in farm country and now more and more small acreage owners, one can move big bales with out a tractor, loader or other large expensive equipment,  and ATV or small tractor, pickup or car one can move them.  suggested to go talk to the local farm stores and see if they would either sell them for him with commission or sell them to the store.but to find some thing to self employ one and build with out special tooling is not easy to find,  and some thing people will pay for,
