When Tig welding, do you ever leave the rod in the puddle when you stop, or remove it and grind the stop every time? Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:the headline seemed a bit personal but like a train crash I had to look.... But seeing that I don't tig I'll stay out of itMiller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. So YES you can own too many tools.
Reply:Why would you grind the stop?  What is there to grind?ɹǝʌo ǝɯ lloɹ 'sıɥʇ pɐǝɹ uɐɔ noʎ ɟı
Reply:scratch start tig will leave a "place" where you exit the puddle.
Reply:It depends on the situation and mood im in. If its stainless I'm more likely to leave it in, if you dont at least leave the rod end in the gas zone it will dirty up the end of hte rod and your  start wont be so good.   In all reality, it doesn't matter. Its up to you. If its a roll out weld, I try not to stop until I'm done with that pass. On position welds, I may leave it in so its ready for the next quarter, but I usually jump around on quarters. Do whatever you feel like doing. As a buddy always says, "its just another weld". Doug
Reply:I don't leave the rod in, and I don't usually grind the stops. If you stop properly you won't necessarily leave a fish eye.

Reply:depends,i typically leave it in, but slow your pull out down, with scratch you pull the heat from the root to the parent metal, but while your doing it watch for the root puddle to solidify, then you can break your arc. That way you wont get a crater crack(fish eye, among other names)  its get really critical on higher chrom contents, ie p91,inkenel(spelling?), hastalloy, etc
Reply:Why scratch start with the machines listed in the op's signature? How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!

Reply:how can you leave it in the puddle? it will freeze in there..
Reply:Why would i use scratch start with the new machine????? Because ive made more xray welds with a basic tig whip and stick machine than carter has liver pills :Pprocisely,,,,,, then your fire up1/4 to 3/8 back from the wire to get the root hot and just continue on.......
Reply:I work on superheated steam lines, upto 3" wall thickness. On roots i ALWAYS tail out whenever i have to stop.
