I've never had a nice enough grinder to worry bout replacing the brushes in it instead of buying a new grinder. A friend gave me a DeWalt D28110, and he said all it needed was brushes for it to work again. How much of a chore is it to replace the brushes in this grinder???93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811

Reply:Sometimes you can just remove the brushes, stretch the springs some, and reinstall them. The original brushes wear down to a point that they no longer have enough spring tension to work right, but there is still plenty of brush material left. You just need to add a little additional spring tension to get more use out of the brushes. If the guy that gave it to you already did this, then yes you will need to replace them. But replacement brushes are cheaper than buying a whole new grinder, and it's easy to do.
Reply:I'll have to go out there in a bit an take it apart and see how worn they are. I already looked up the parts thru DeWalt and for a couple dollars I think it seems well worth ordering new brushes.93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811
Reply:The best grinders have a built in switch in the brushes.  When the brushes are worn the machine suddenly will stop working.  On cheaper tools the brushes continue to wear.  The spring pressure is reduced.  The brushes start to bounce off the armature accelerating wear and burning the commutator.  Once the commutator is burned the cost of repair is not worth the price of the tool....   Best tip I learned was from a Skil sales presentation about 40 years ago.  If you are working your tool hard run it in the air at full speed for ten to thirty seconds.  This will cool the armature.  Otherwise when you set the tool down the heat on the windings will cook the insulation and shorten the life of the tool.
