I am narrowing down my choices for a new hood to one of these two Jackson hoods. I am most interested in optical clarity/resolution. Has anyone used both of these hoods that could comment on the color differences (which is better and why) and how bad I would miss the three modes of the W-60 (weld/grind/cut) is I went with the W-70 which doesn't have these? I am not welding for a living, and I won't be spending 10-12 hours a day under this hood. Headgear probably matters to me less than visual clarity and being able to get the best picture of the weld puddle possible. Thanks.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I've been on this road for a long, long time and I've found that everyone's vision is different so you really have to try different one's out before you buy. I haven't found an LWS that will let you strike an arc with a test helmet yet but maybe you'll be more fortunate. If not, you should look around in your area for a Weld-o-Rama-type affair like the ones we host here in So. Cal. It's how I finally settled on mine thanks to DJ, Terry and the others.

Reply:I'm sorry. I just looked. It's a I settled on the Jackson Safety W70 BH3 Grand DS. Bright in aluminum and good in steel.Last edited by jlames; 04-02-2014 at 01:04 AM.Reason: correction
Reply:Well I dont quite have the exact info you were looking for but I have used the Jackson BOSS for a few years then we got a Miller Elite and love this helmet a lot better as the buttons are easier to use and the front of the helmet has 3 sensors. Which I see that the new Jackson has 4 sensors so which helps in not loosing your welding shade when one or more is blocked by an object. So hard to compare. It looks as though Jackson has upped their helmets some over the Miller. But we have had are Miller in the shop for  over a year now it has held up well. Welding GTAW,GMAW,and SMAW. Also some Plasma cutting as well and the Miller works great. So hope this helps some.GalenMiller TrailBlazer 302 EFIThermal Dynamics 252i w/WeldCraft WP 9F tig torch and foot controlThermal Dynamics Pak 52Millermatic 250 w/Spoolmate 30aLincoln SA-200 gas driven welder from grandfatherBlacksmith shop
Reply:I have a Jackson Nexgen and the cheaper version of the balder helmet as a spare.  I'm a hobbyist as well.  I believe that the color and clarity are about the same, leaning towards the Jackson.  Take into account that I do have the cheaper version of the Balder though.  I have used the cut/grind/torch mode and do find it useful.  I rarely use it, because I get a much better view of things when grinding or torch cutting with safety glasses, tinted or clear.
Reply:I've been using a w60 truesight for about 2 years and I love it.
Reply:I tried a Balder and clarity seemed very similar to the Speedglas 9100X.I did not use it very long as some knuckle head put a head gear in it that was not even near close to correct and it fit like a saddle on a sow.
Reply:Amazon has a version of the Balder w-70 hood on sale, and it is really cheap compared to places like cyberweld. I am wondering what the catch is. They call it the "Jackson Safety W70 BH3 Grand DS Auto Darkening Welding Helmet"  I don't see a "Grand DS" version of this listed on any other website, including the Jackson/Kimberly Clark website.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Too bad you are not in So Cal,  I own both of those hoodsThe Balder series has a completely different color when welding than any of the other series of Jackson hoods.   They also have the highest clarity, darkness consistency and anti distortion ratings.  Sent from my SCH-I545 using TapatalkLast edited by soutthpaw; 04-03-2014 at 11:41 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Grand Ds is the big window version of the auto dark glass from www.Balder.si. You can get it in a Tigerhood Futura also. I got the smaller window one in the Fibre metal hood but the Jackson balder helmet only comes with the grand ds.
Reply:Thanks guys, I think I will pull the trigger on the balderMiller Multimatic 255

Reply:The True Sight 60 really shines when it comes to wire welding.  Excellent puddle view when trying to see itty bitty puddles that freeze fast.  You can actually see your "wet" line.  Most wire welds are, in my opinion, "cold" with very fast freeze and limited wet-in.  This helmet allows you to keep a good eye on the wet puddle.BUT...............for IN POSITION stick welding, it isn't that great.  With the "yellow pass" filter there's not enough contrast to clearly tell the difference between the fluid puddle, and the cooling slag behind the puddle(critical when monitoring your bead profile).  IT'S ALL YELLOWNow for OUT OF POSITION stick welding....it's the best I've seen outside the old fixed gold shades.  Puddle visibility is bar-none the best I've ever seen.  I believe this is due to the fact that, let's say, an uphill weld produces a good amount of slag that freezes fairly fast (cools) below the puddle because of the weaving motion that momentarily takes the heat out of the center of the weld.  After all, you're building shelves as you progress upwards.  The cooling allows some darkening, and allows excellent visibility of the still molten puddle.  And there's good separation between the flare of the arc, and the puddle, when welding uphill while looking down thru the arc if you're working below eye level.Sound confusing????????????????  It's very hard to describe what anybody's eyes observe.Anyways....with the True Sight it helps to turn the shade up a bit when stick welding.  #11.  It gives you a little more contrast. The 4 sensors have never flashed me since I bought the helmet.  Excellent sensitivity, and arc detection.Eye fatigue after a good day of use...........Virtually none.  Beats any of my older shades. As usual  The headgear, as with most helmets, SUCKS!!!  I have yet to own a helmet that doesn't regularly flip down WHEN I DON'T WANT IT TO, and smash my cigarette in my mouth"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
