Pipe welders please help

Hello I'm new here. I'm practicing for a weld test and the print calls for a 4in sch40 pipe to be welded to a 4x4 3/8in plate in the 5g position. 60 root pass and 70 cap. I have welded a little pipe before. But when I make the root pass it just doesn't seem like I'm getting good penitration I have a pretty substantial landing on the pipe and I'm running at 90 with 50 dig with an 1/8in gap. I just would like to know if anyone has made this weld before and could offer me any suggestions. Also I don't know how many passes to make I'm doing 3 right now the root than a little weave than a big weave over that and I just don't know what's best. Attached Images

Reply:I have never seen this test but I think you may need to run hotter on the root because that plate is going to take more heat than two beveled pieces of pipe would.
Reply:A lot of times its harder to fuse to the plate, it welds to the pipe part good, but sometimes it does not fuse well to the plate.I would (though I've never taken a "official" welding test, but welded stuff like this,) would be to have a 1/8 land and gap (like you have)And make a circular motion holding longer on the side of the plate. Reply:For the root pass I'd run a J motion. Keeping the long part of the J on the plate. The curl of the J on the pipe. That way the majority of the heat in put into the plate.
