Im trying like hell to figure what it is that Im doing wrong. I cant seem to get a crown on the back side of my root pass. It always ends up dead even with the plates. Im using a 1/8 gap and 30 degree bevel with a 6010 rod. Can anyone over some advice here, Im taking a welding class at night at my local community college.
Reply:Amp settings on the machine would help. Give as much info as possible when asking for assistance. The more we know, the less we have to guess and the better your answers will be.When I see these sorts of issues with students doing mig at the tech school, I usually find the guys have the machine set to high and the puddle sucks back as it cools. ( most doing stick never make it to overhead bevel but joints in the class length) There's a fine line between having too much heat and blowing holes in things or getting suck back and not having enough heat to get full penetration. I also find this same issue with suck back if they travel too slow on occasion. Again too much heat is the root cause. Since this is stick, I'd guess either the amps might be set to high or you are holding slightly too long an arc and getting too much heat. I could also see your technique being off a bit as 6010 is a fast freeze rod and your technique might not be allowing the bead to cool fast enough. Also I often find guys haven't yet really learned to read the puddle well in general. If you can read the puddle and react to what you see, then most of these issues only take minor adjustments to correct. If you can't read the puddle well, then often results are hit and miss simply because you can't tell when you are doing things right and when you are doing things wrong. the only solution to this is practice. Try and pay close attention the the puddle and try and keep every thing the same every time. If anything try and only change one variable at a time so you can watch what the results are. At some point you will have an "Ah Ha!" moment and everything will click and it will all make sense.Good luck..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong if you're not getting any suck back. But try really jamming the rod up in hard in the root gap to get more penetration
Reply:I don't know how strict they are on their setup procedures but try changing your land, gap and heat. Each one of those influence the other ones and how everything will act. Also rod angle plays a huge factor in how the root will go in. You need to be more specific on what your setup is and post lots of pictures. It is hard to give you any real world advice when I don't know all the factors. |
