I'm going to take a weld test real soon and this is what I'm working with.3/8 carbon plates with a 1/8 gap and carbon backstrap. I'm using 11018 rod and .052 flux in horizontal, Vertical and overhead.I was told that I have to fill all 6 tests in 3 passes and am not allowed to weave.I went to a local welding school to practice for these tests and was able to get all the flux tests pretty good and the Vertical and overhead stick pretty goodBut I can't seem to get the horizontal stick even close with 3 stringers. My question is IS this even possible and if it so please give some insight on how to get it done. Thanks

Reply:What size rod? What bevel? Also, you can use a pattern while welding and end up with a fuller, wider bead. What they are generally referring to is no lace caps.Last edited by walker; 04-11-2014 at 11:54 PM.
Reply:it's a 1/8th rod and and I know what you're saying but I just cant fill up the horizontal without weaving it in 3 passes, Like I said I have the others down but i feel like I'm gonna have to do 4 to get that one right. I feel what it is may come down to is what they consider a string and a weave ya know, I mean how big can go without em saying I weaved it? If I can fill up half way with the root pass I'm good to go but I don't know, I'm gonna be welding on Naval ships and I don't know what they're looking for so I'm at a bit of a loss.
Reply:how wide of a bevel are you using? is there a specific angle you must use for the test. If you can make it smaller, it should help.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com |
