Heres a cane I've been working on in my spare time at work.  It is made out of 3/4 carbon steel square stock.  I used a oxy-fuel torch with a rosebud tip on it to heat the steel so I could twist it.  After I had my desired twists I reheated the end and beat it with a 3lb sledge to round the bottom.  I formed all the straight edges over the anvil with a 5lb sledge then rolled the end of the cane around a round die we had in the shop.  This whole project was done with some pliers to twist and just heat from a acetylene torch.  I sand blasted all the mill scale off the steel once I was finished and reheated the cane to a dull red and wiped boiled linseed oil on it to help keep it from rusting.   Once it was all dry I cleaned it and  sprayed it with a couple layers of clear coat.  Oh and it could possibly double as a survival weapon hahaany replies or comments are appreciatedOnward with the picturesLast edited by travisbaker; 10-28-2012 at 09:21 PM.

Reply:my scale at homes not excatly right so somewhere between 6-9lbs not to heavy but enough to let someone know if it ends up beside their head haha
Reply:The cane idea is really nice looking.  From a practical standpoint, it probably would have to be for show, however.  The most common user would be a handicapped or partially handicapped person.  The handle twists would probably be very uncomfortable and dig into their hands and the weight is probably prohibitive.  My wife is handicapped and a 6-7 pound cane would not be usable.  FYI, 3/4" bar stock is 1.91 pounds per foot.  A 36" long cane would weigh about 5.7 lbs.  Her aluminum cane weighs about 3 lbs.
Reply:yeah its a show cane, my grandfather was the person to test it out and he is handicapped and said from his stand point it would be good for maybe a single day use like possibly church outings or  resteraunts. I know its not for everyone but I was showing some of the guys at the local college some  techniques on twisting steel stock and this is what I came up with after showing them how to heat and twist easily.
Reply:Very nice. I think the end of the handle looks unfinished myself however. Upsetting that end and balling it a bit or rounding off the corners would have been my ideas for there..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Analytical are we?! Much of the crap that us welders build is overkill anyways. Its just supposed to look good. Good job travis.Ranger 305gMillermatic 140 AutosetDewalt Chopsaw2 grindersMy Fists
Reply:yeah I originally planned upsetting the end and balling it but I had other paid projects to attend to so I went ahead finished it.  bp626indamix- thanks and yeah I always seem to tend to overbuild everything whether it be structual or artsy stuff.
Reply:Cool design...you will need crutches and walking with that thing.
Reply:thanks

Reply:you guys are awesome thanks for all the complements,  I think I'm now going to make a few smaller pry bars out of some 3/4 or 1 inch stock and do some twisting for looks but upset the ends and forge the tapers out for the flat "prying" part.
Reply:COOL !    Those light weight alum ones are for 110 pound people. THIS is for a REAL MAN !If you see a guy with this, walk to the other side .
Reply:In my fab shop, we made ornamental gates + with HR Sq Bar. We simply put 1 end in a vice and a 16" Crescent and twisted away. It gave us a full length twist of course. Your way is nicely selective for spaced twists. pfatz
Reply:I used a crescent wrench ande vise to twist before and it works very good.
Reply:After Dad had his stoke he said he wanted a cane that reflected him a lot more than what he was using.   Us being plumbers by trade, I had some 1" type k copper and a few 90s laying around.   Sil-phos and a wire wheel.  Few coats of clear coat.   He was in love.   I have it in the shop somewhere. After the old man passed I just couldn't get rid of it.   Sorry to hijack.  I enjoy the look of twisted steel.  Looks cool.Miller BobcatHarris cutting outfitMiller spectrum 625 plasmaVariety of shopmade toolsthanks, sorry bout your dad.  id like to see a picture of that cane if you have one.
Reply:Appreciate the kind thoughts Travis.  I will try to find his cane and post some picts.Miller BobcatHarris cutting outfitMiller spectrum 625 plasmaVariety of shopmade tools
Reply:twill do for a cane..but if you are gonna make tools(prybar) you'll need to harden the tip, which i dont think you can do with mild steel...
Reply:You can forge weld a high carbon steel tip into the mild steel or you can case harden the whole part
Reply:now we're talkin...
