I've noticed a lot of people use different helmets for stick/mig/tig, is there a reason?  I'm taking mig right now and use a auto darkening lens, I'm signed up to take stick welding in the summer and tig in the fall.  BTW the lws priced a pipeliners helmet with a passive lens for $50 because I'm a student should I buy it?
Reply:AD helmets you don't have to keep flipping up and down when changing rods or skip welding ect. Nothing wrong with a PL helmet, once you get use to flipping it up and down, wouldn't hurt to learn how to work using a PL helmet.________________________________Everlast PA140STEverlast PowerPlasma 50And no you can't Borrow them
Reply:I use the cheapest hood I have if I stick weld since the lens gets dirty so quickly. Then the next cheaper one for mig. Use my best ones for tig. The better ones I have, have more expensive cover plates. I also tig more than anything so those are my more comfortable hoods too. And the biggest reason is cheap hoods work on stick and mig, but will not work on tig. DC low amp tig is the hardest to sense, and the HF can mess with cheap electronics as I've seen it happen. As well as cheaper hoods sensitivity doesn't go high enough for tig welding.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:That is a decent price for a pipeliner. Me I like the Huntsman 411p. I has the latches at the top and bottom and slides smooth inbetween.  Takes a couple years to break in, but it is good for decades. You can slip in a gold lens or autodark insert if you wish. I buy them for my newbies and when they have cash they buy an autodark, but most go right back to the Hunstman fiber hood. http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?P...&PARTPG=INLMK3I also like my Huntsman 711p for light tig work, and my Miller hood with coolband for hot days, and Accustrike with fan for hot days and rapid tacking or fast production work. The best autodark I have tried is the 3M Speedglass. My guys with vision problems like them. But they are pricy.Last edited by shovelon; 04-20-2014 at 10:12 PM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I use a Pipeliner when stick welding because its cheap to replace the lens. My Miller DE gets used for most mig and tig welding.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:i've used the fibre metal flip front for about 40 years for stick, mig and flux/dual shield. it works very well for me except now i'm wearing glasses and have to use a cheater while welding. although they don't last too long i use the glass cover plate.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Thanks for all the replies and advice
Reply:Shovel, y'ole fart, if I could find the Huntsman here it'd be hanging on my machine. I wore those for 20 years and the pipeliner for upside down work. Good, uber light, old school, that doesn't let a lot of light in behind it.Great hood !Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
