Built a welding stand using 1.5" square steel tube and a Park Tools bicycle clamp http://www.parktool.com/product/delu...stand-prs-4w-1 - it is designed for bicycle mechanics to clamp the bicycle by the seat post and allow rotation.  It's useful for the type of work I do, which is welding chair leg extensions on to steel round 7/8" 18 gauge tube with an internal reinforcement.  The clamp comes with rubber jaws, nice for not marring surfaces but of course this doesn't allow for ground.  Of course sometimes I am quickly reminded that I forgot to attach the ground  .  What I am imagining is woven copper cloth or something to put in the jaws.  I really don't want to repaint the surface of what I am clamping, so the softer the better.  I realize there needs to be some grounding that will burn some paint of what I have clamped, that little pock mark of a burn is better than scratching the entire surface.I'm clamping to 18 gauge steel, the extensions are 16 gauge, internal tube is 16 gauge (might go with 17 gauge in future).  Current technique is to fusion weld by pulsing and and weaving. Put the heat on the 16 gauge, wait for a pool, quickly weaving to the 18 gauge.  Usually comes to two pulses on the 16 gauge, one pulse weaving to the 18 gauge and back.  I try to avoid using filler rod.  Not sure what the pulse amperage is running, but have it set to 75 and generally keep the pedal down.  I just mention this so there is an idea of the amount of current the ground needs to be able to handle.  I'm not welding 1/2" plate. As an off topic note, what size tungsten and cup would you be using for this?  Since it is such small diameter round tube, with three other chair legs in my way that are often hot, I rarely have an ideal torch angle. I've been using 1/16 because the .040 burns up, even when running lower amps and not pulsing.  I have no idea what cup size I'm using other than it is on the small size.  It is the air cooled torch that came with my portable Miller inverter type rig, want to say type 7 comes to my old mind. Thanks for any suggestions that might make this easier.Last edited by kopek; 04-21-2014 at 01:06 PM.
Reply:you cannot ground through a painted surface. you can ground thru the seat post if it's chromed.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
Reply:Is the bottom of the chair leg open ? Or could you remove the end cap on leg and stick something inside for a ground ?
