Reply:VERY COOL!  Didn't take you long to start using those in a real project.  Nice polished finish.  Is there any reason you used countersunk rivets, instead of a universal, or round, head?Wish I knew how to use solid rivets!  ;-)  (hee hee)Kev.- See my solid rivet projects here:  http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=122188- See my Solid Rivets 101 thread here:  http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=172474Last edited by Machine_Punk; 11-13-2012 at 09:40 PM.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio

Reply:Another stand out job Eliot.  Did you buy the stainless prefinished or did you do it all yourself by hand?  I'm assuming given that it was a riveted piece with no welding, the size and uniformity of the finish that it came finished but...
Reply:Also to you Eliot, but Machine_Punk as well, where are you guys sourcing your rivets from?  I got delving into the subject last night and definitely want to try my hand using them.  Do you both hammer them by hand or are you using pnuematics and blind rivets?
Reply:I really dig it!  Nice choice of beer too.  I just had Smithwicks for the first time this weekend during a ceremony for the USMC's 237th birthday.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:Very nice work. My 1st thought on seeing it was that you had sandwiched a piece of black plexi between the two sheets of SS. ( that would remove most of those pesky issues with small children)My only question would be if you used feet under the base. I've found large flat surfaces generally don't sit well even on interior floors and tend to rock. Just adding a few small feet will stabilize things greatly..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks guys! I got my equipment at Avery. The other one is aircraft spruce. The pneumatic gun must be a feather trigger 4x or similar. They are 150 bucks at least. Don't buy an air hammer. It is like using a bulldozer to collect the leaves in your yard. Get the rivet sets (the thing you put on the end of the rivet gun) specifically for the rivet head you are using. Flush and flat are different, don't make the same mistake I did. Grainger will send rivets to your local store saving you shipping but 100 there was twice as expensive as my usual rivet supplier jay cee sales , there I get them 6 bucks per 100. I use 3/16 ( shaft) rivets, aluminum. The SS was # 4 finish , I buffed off the brushing marks and sanded progressively finer to 1000 grit, then a sisel wheel with yellow compound then a denim wheel with white. I will show a pic of the table in its new home soon. I will likely add thick felt pads to the bottom to keep it from wobbling. Grand daughters may eventually wedge a raisin or two in there but if that's the biggest problem I have I'll consider it a win! My rivet inspiration comes from Kevin of aerodrome studios ( machine punk) thanks Kevin, any additions to the list of suppliers?Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:Nice table Elliot! Not quite airworthy standards but nice anyway and the dog looks to be impressed, but so far you have yet to rise to the cat's level of enthusiasm.  OK, since I hold an A&P with IA, I have done a tad bit of riveting in the past 4 decades.  I do a lot of business with "THE YARD" in Wichita  http://www.yardstore.com/   Good prices and service as well as handling surplus equipment for the cost conscious (copy that "cheap ba$#ards") like me.Another decent source is AIRPARTS in Kansas City, Ks.  They handle some tools but mostly material.  Nice folks and they speak both airplane and race car fluently.  http://www.airpartsinc.com/Gone are the days of the old BOEING SURPLUS where I got several rivet guns.  They had barrels of used stuff.  Just dig through until you found the best looking one and pay your $10 to the guy at the counter.  Rivet sets by the pound as were the bucking bars.  Drill bits by the pound as well (79 cents a pound IIRC)For airworthy specs on riveted structure refer to AC No: 43.13-2B  available in PDF http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/m...2043.13-2B.pdfRogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Nice roger! My work won't ever fly unless it is tossed out the window so air worthiness is not an issue. I like the look and the strength. Thanks for the tips regarding suppliers. I just got some copper rivets today so I'm excited to use them! My next project is a pair of rustic treasure boxes for my granddaughters using my 1847 log cabin wood and I'll use flush copper rivets for artistic accent only. I guess I'll call that thinking about the outside of the box! Wish me luck!Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Thanks to the esposa! Finally got an O/A setup

Reply:how did u get this finish what did u use?
Reply:I'm not sure if I would ever set anything on it. Too nice.
Reply:Zglozman, see post # 17, it takes a while but works out pretty well. Basically use a fine fiber finishing disc ( gator, lowes). To get the buff marks and scratches, then palm sander with 180, 220, 300, 400, 600, 1000. Then I got a set of wheels that mount on a drill from hd, sisel and denim with yellow and white respectively.Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45!
