I was doing some work at the local sawmill today and thought you guys might like a video. This is an old 52" mill powered by a Murphy Diesel, all belts and levers, no modern conveniences, or safety's for that matter. The man running the mill is Pete the mechanic. They were sawing some 18"x14" stuff for a custom order.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUxoT1Y3VYA[/ame]Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Am I the only one watching this thinking.... Hey, I want to rid the log...? not over the Saw though. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Whatever you need they have or will cut, give them a call.http://www.jbsawmill.com/Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:That thing is crazy. The way it slices through that log makes you think how well it would cut through a person, and/or limbs. It reminds me of the old saw bench my dad has for cutting fire wood to size. No where near as much power as that thing would have, just a little single cylinder engine on it, with a 3 or so foot blade on it. That thing looks pretty scary, but the mill above is waaay crazy. I'm amazed my dad has made it so far, mostly intact actually.
Reply:Thanks for posting! .That reminds me of having some pine logs sawn on an early 1900's Lane mill in northern NH some years back -  about 1990 if I recall correctly.  Slightly different setup but same idea.   I rather like the old machinery. - MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:I used to have a workshop next door to an old guy that had saws like that, I used to live watching him set it up and cutting logs, Probably the reason i didn't get a lot of work done, Sadly the old boy passed away, Not sure what happened to all his saws
Reply:Anybody know how I can see the vid using a Mac?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:There is a guy across the street from Marc's house with the same type set up but it's powered by a 1 lunger..Really funny sounding but cool......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You know what, My old man used to have the frame of one of those. Not sure if he ever had an engine / saw blade on it. Not that i can remember, but I'm sure he used it in the past. I think he was going to turn it into a stump remover, but eventually modified a walk behind slasher/mower to do the job. They look pretty crazy. I could picture one of those things digging in and taking off across the fieldI'll have to look into it Mick, sound interesting.
Reply:Those saws are incredible!  Incredibly dangerous.
Reply:I've put a many of hour on both circular and band saws.  There is no way to make a circular one safe, especially on smaller mills without loosing production efficiency at an affordable price.  IF a tooth comes out of that saw while it is spinning, it will tear through any thing it comes in.  Fortunately most of them come out and sling straight up.  In almost any old sawmill shed, you'll see a hole or two in the roof from a stray tooth.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Ol' Pete was way closer to that blade than I would be. But the guy leaning completely over the log while it was on the trolley was as stupid as stupid gets.__________________

Reply:Originally Posted by Mick120Actually, that mill is quite safe campared to a Hargan Saw.A mate of mine had a museum in Captains Flat (maybe still has.....Stiffy, go check the old Hospital there will ya???) and, had a Hargan Saw powered by a BSA B31 500 single engine.NOT for the faint of heart..........
Reply:I've had about 4 of those old gravelys.  The most dangerous attachment was the rotary plow when it hit a rock or a root.  Never stand BETWEEN the handle bars and hold on with everything you got.  That and the two wheel sulky on the older convertables would jack knife on you and pinch you between the handle bars if you tried to back up with the least bit of turn.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
