Ive been using the .030 Lincoln L-56 Superarc on my Miller 211 with typical 75/25% gas shield mix.  Since I've been welding 1/4" and thicker, I don't know if there would be any added benefit to moving up to .035 size mig wire.  Can anyone let me know if it's better to use on thicker steel with my Miller 211, running on 230 volts?  Is there that much of a difference?   I'm a stick burner and have limited mig experience. Thanks. "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... If I can't light up, I'm gonna light out!"-JodyIdealarc 250 "Fatman"MM 252MM 211 "Little boy" Victor Torches
Reply:Miller recommends .035 solid wire for thickness over 1/8". Looking at the specs on the wire from Lincoln and the amp/volt chart on the machine from Miller, it looks like the two wires overlap over much of the same area, which somewhat matches what Miller shows on the chart they have for wire size and thicknesses.  .035 looks like it tops out just a bit higher in short arc from what Lincolns chart shows. I like to keep .030 wire in my machine simply because it's a better "generic" wire for both thick and thin. If I need to do a lot of 1/4" and thicker though I either change the roll in the machine to .035 wire or go make use of the XMT's at the tech school that are loaded with .035 wire and 92/8 so I can get up into spray mode..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Hello ANVIL, likely the difference might be something like this: if your feeder is capable of running a high enough speed you can provide enough .030 wire to push the machine to it's maximum output. If not, you may need to jump up to the .035 wire to be able to do this. Personally, if I was using the 211 I would probably go with the .030 wire, it'll do everything that you would like to do as you kind of already made the statement that it works well for thick and thin. Just my $.02. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:The .035 will let you use the top end of your machine much easier. Plus you'll be able to run the middle ranges at slightly lower wire speeds. Reply:In theory, .035 wire would make the best use of the max. output of the MM211. However, some welders just seem to run certain sizes of wire better than others.I would second the idea of trying the .035 wire to see which works best for your situation.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:I ran my first spool of .035 wire through my MM211 today and I was very impressed with it. I've been welding a lot of 1/8" angle and todays task called for 3/16" walled tubing so I pulled out my .030 and put in the .035. My machine seemed to really enjoy the change the starts were smoother and the sizzle sounded smoother as well. The wire I used was Hobart and it created very little spatter, I have tried the Lincoln SuperArc and I had as much filler on the workbench as in the weld.MM211Rigid chopsawDelta Drill Press
