Being as fuss as I am known to be, I tried three of the top tier welding helmets. Jackson Truesight, Miller Digital Elite, and Optrel e680. All excellent helmets but I chose the Optrel for several reasons. To my eye, the optics are superior to the other two, the adjustments are easy to use and the helmet is a bit lighter. The Jackson was pretty heavy and did not come down far enough to prevent neck burn. I did like the amber lens but I have been welding for so long that my eyes had a bit of trouble going from dark green to amber rather than dark green to light green. To me, the Miller was a bit clunky and heavy and somewhat over sized. The X mode is a nice feature but one can adjust the sensitivity down on all models and I rarely get into situations that I would need that feature. All shells tend to drift down a bit after up and down flipping but that's what helmets do. The Optrel has a very nice feature in adjusting the depth/facial distance of the helmet while on your head, using a separate control knob as opposed to the puncture placement of the other two. I found that very comfortable to use. So all in all it is certainly a matter of personal choice but the Optrel, given the very clear clean Swiss optics and adjustment features, came in first in my book. All have the torch mode and some the grind mode, but wanting to preserve any expensive helmet, I use other gear when gas welding or cutting as well as grinding to keep this helmet in top condition. I hope this helps anyone making an expensive decision, as I consider this expense a tool and wanted to pick the best tool for my applications... and for me it was the Optrel.Pros:All good... great lens clarity, lens speed, and adjustmentsCons:So far...none, but I like a bit of flash and few fun shell graphics would be nice...so conservative!
Reply:Thank you, in the past I have used this site to glean info about products that other welders have tried. I guess it was time for me to join and put in my experience with various products since I found the info on this site to be very helpful.

Reply:As long as you've started this let me add my opinion on the two helmetsI currently own, one a SpeedGlas 9002 and the other a Lincoln Viking 3350(?).The SpeedGlas is a single shade (10) utility model.  It has a very nice fit with plenty of adjustment in the quite comfortable headband.  The shell is surprisingly light too.  On the down side outer lenses are pretty expensive and the inners aren't far behind.  The field of view is also a bit small, but not so much as to be bothersome. The Lincoln is their current top of the line unit.  It has an amazingly large field of view and easy to handle adjusting knobs for its functions. The protective inner and outer lenses are reasonably priced and the helmet itself is plenty light enough.  That said mine is soon to be listed on either Craig's List or EBay simply because it doesn't fit.  The thing is so loose on my head it keeps falling off.  My wife can't wear it either.  The only way I can wear it at all is to put on a baseball hat (backwards) first and then put the helmet over it.  this is with the sweat band in place and all the adjustments taken in all the way.  We've been all over it a dozen times, trust me, it's the helmet, not us.  So I wouldn't recommend this helmet to anyone with a small to normal sized head; cone-heads and pin-heads need not apply either though the bucket would make a good fit for most fat-heads.  Seriously, the headpiece simply does not fit small headed people.Last edited by ThomWV; 04-24-2014 at 09:52 AM.Reason: Syntax error
