Hello. I searched around the internet and couldn't find an answer to my question. I bought a 12" x 8", 18 gauge weld steel plate and would like to put a mirror finish on it. I had stopped at Lowe's earlier to see what they had in the way of pads for my DeWalt random orbit sander. 320 grit was the highest number. They did have a headlight cleaning kit for a drill, it had an 800, 1500 and 2000 grit along with a buffer pad and a bottle of polish. I started with 120 grit on my DeWalt until smooth then moved to the drill and pad set finishing with the buffer pad and polish. Well, it turned out pretty smooth but definitely not mirror. Just wondering if it's possible to get the finish I'm looking for and if so, how do I do it. Thanks for listening and sorry for the long post.
Reply:Is this weldable steel from a hardware store? For a mirror-like finish you are going to have to start with stainless, probably a high grade at that.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:To get a mirror like finish that will last, you will most likely need to get it chromed, if it is carbon steel. Other wise it will quickly start to rust on you, ruining the mirror finish. What ya need the mirror finish on it for, if you don't mind me asking?
Reply:Thanks for the response. To Gravel, yes I did buy it at a hardware store. Stainless would probably be better. I was just curious to see if it was possible. To Bistineau, getting it chromed would be really cool but there are no chrome shops in my area. I actually looked in to getting a triple chrome kit but thought I would see how far I could take this weld steel plate. I build Hi-Fi tube power amps and the plate would be for the top of the chassis. My friend makes the chassis's for me out of nice hard woods. I guess it doesn't need to be a mirror finish. I am always looking for ways to improve the looks of my amps. Anyway, thanks.
Reply:I've seen "chrome" spray paint.  This might be a good project to try it out on.http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-191...xp_grid_pt_0_2http://www.amazon.com/VHT-SP5251-Fin...xp_grid_pt_0_1GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
