Reply:That's actually more of a flat weld  than a horizontal. On a weld like that, hold your rod angle at 45 degrees to the joint then lower your hand a wee bit more to direct the end of the electrode a little more on the upper piece of metal. Watch the puddle and ensure it is washing onto both pieces. You may have to use a slight up and down oscillation to ensure you get even wash in on both pieces. Direct more to the upper piece and let gravity and your electrode manipulation help you. Don't move too fast. Let the puddle wash in onto both pieces before you move too fast. Keep your arc length, rod angle and travel speed consistent. By the looks of your pic, your puddle is only getting onto the lower piece I metal. 7018 would be much better for this in my opinion. 6013 has such a heavy slag.Last edited by snoeproe; 04-11-2014 at 06:39 AM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I hate to sound like me again, but.....7018 has much more controlable slag/puddle in my opinion.Might get some 7018, 3/32in or 2.4mm.....Do they have 7018 in New Zealand???Here's what 7018 can do on 1/4inch steel.Screw the 6013. IMO not very humble either!~JohnJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:7018 slag curls up on its own like that when the temp of the parent metal is just right and a decent weld is laid down. If the parent metal temp is too hot or cold, you won't see self peeling slag.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I never challenged anyone, they just want to poke fun at my weld on scrap metal, in less then perfect conditions....I weld for a living, mainly equipment and farm machinery, and my welds that I did on a truck hitch, are pulling 20,000lbs without a problem....You must realize, 6013 across the pond, is far superior to our 6013.I've been through pipefitters threads, and have deep respect for him and his work.... I never said I was better than any of you guys.Don't take this as a challenge, critism, cheap shot, bash, or insult....This is a pick of a truck and trailer. Each of those bales weigh 1,000lbs....There is ten bales on that load, we've hauled up to 20 bales on that trailer. If you don't believe me, this summer when we get to hauling bales, I'll get pics and vids of it.I mounted that bed on that truck, and put the hitch on the back.If you want to poke fun at my humble work, saying that if I want be called weldor, than I should do 6g titanium duplex and inconel....Well,Welding isn't always the in shop on a comfortable stool, and speedglass helmets. This is a forum for many different fields of welding, we cant all do everything....~JohnLast edited by AKweldshop; 04-13-2014 at 05:09 PM.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:He poked fun at the c-clamp....What was I supposed to do???I said look at the weld on top, and see if you can make it look like that with the things I used....If you want to laugh, and say, "that's cute, but really make it look like my welds then I'll give you thumbs up instead of a middle finger.... Well, someone could of said, "that looks good"???Just forget the whole thing, and when you guys say we have to see your welds, before you can inspect others welds, I'll say I showed my 7018 bead, and got laughed off of WeldingWeb....~JohnJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:I think the problem here is, you're fishing for compliments on something we see daily. Slag curling up is no big deal. It's not that this is a tough crowd, it's just we are not as impressed as you are with something so simple. But let's put this behind us!So, how did you do with open root pipe welding with 7018?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
