I found this and thought it might clear up questions about just what is required.  The AWS is similar with some variations.  The worst experience for new welders is to discover that if only someone had told them a bit more info they would have passed the test.  It is not uncommon.  The welding bureau people are there to help you pass.... not fail the test.

Reply:One thing that I warn people about and this CWB guy also does it.  He says "maximum sized fillet in the corner 5/16 or 8mm"  So many people get 5/16 on their mind.  They could lay down a 3/16th fillet and still pass visual.  The smaller the bead the easier it is to make sure you have melted right into the corner.  If you make a larger fillet then there is a possiblity that you pile metal up on top rather than fuse the corner.   Spend time making sure you can restart your bead with good fusion before you do the test.  He does not mention maximum build up.  I think it is 3mm or 1/18th  He mentions not to have underfill.  The test looks so easy but people still fail.
Reply:60 % of folks doing all 4 positions fail at least one position the first time. You have to manage your rod consumption to be able to pass this test. You never want any unnecessary stops and restarts in your first 2 passes. Also, when you stop at the desired location to tie in with your restart, you want the end of your bead to be dished in, not humped  up. Having the end of the bead dished in makes it more easy to make a clean and well fused restart.Last edited by snoeproe; 04-26-2014 at 09:09 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Do you guys have any idea what this test cost? I've never paid for a test, company always paid my wages, and the cost of the test.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:First time and all 4 positions is $500. Ticket is good for 2 years. Re cert check test is $150 ish after 2 years. Union pays for mine. The check test is only one plate. Vertical up pass with restart on the square side and over head for the rest of the plate. One thing I like to do is mark my backing strip with a 5/16 chisel to identify the stop/restart location. I find it much easier to see the mark on the backing strip than a soap stone mark on the plate.Last edited by snoeproe; 04-26-2014 at 11:07 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:winnipeg its 170 per, and you get a discount as the amount of tests goes up.if you can step across it I can weld it.
Reply:The CWB tests are relatively cheap.  I talked to a supervisor in a company certified to ASME (pressure work)  He said that sending pieces out to the lab was around 400 each.  By the time you counted time for the employee to do the test and prep it was easily a thousand.  They had six procedures to test in that company so a fully qualified welder cost them around 6K.
