New to the forum so here is my back ground. I am 21 years old ive been welding since I was 14. Started out in the farm shops while in highschool and now have 4 years in the river industry and 2 years of that also operating a small side business. My goal is to have my own rig and begin pipelining. Yes before it is asked I do have experience, I am not certified traditionally but I have passed bend, dye and x-ray test in the ship yards conducted by the coast guard. Ive ran 6010, 6011, 7018, 8018, 10018, e308, e309 as well as bronze alloy rods. Worked with pipe 2"-36" the bigger being 24-36" on the sand dredges, ive ran stainless pipe and worked with numerous layouts (I cheat I have magnetic templates).Im wondering if you experienced guys can give me a push in the right direction and some help. If nothing works out then ill be starting the pipeline welders cert course in the fall at our local tech college just because the teacher helps his serious pipe students get placed. Im in the west ky area also so not much pipe here.
Reply:For doing pipeline business you need to welding machines and cranes for lifting etc..
Reply:Tech college for the ROW???I really really really suggest being a welders helper for at least a year first. I was a pressure welder that worked industrial and commercial jobs for a good 7 years. I could weld pipe up hill just fine. But making the connections (most important aspect) is very hard at first. Even a golden arm can't just rig up and start mainlining. Oil, natural gas, main lines, tie in crew, pumping stations, launchers, hot tap tie ins. It is a very diverse field. I suggest calling/emailing Local 798. As a welder I have made $6,000 cash in a week, 60 hours. Helpers can make $2000-$3000 a week. Is very hard work and a lot is expected of you. But I will say I hear guys say they want to work on the line all the time. It sounds like you have a lot of skill already. My .02Last edited by RodBender; 04-30-2014 at 09:24 PM.Local 83 |
