As I really don't do much thin metal, I want to get you suggestions on which MIG wire diameter to use for welding up my 16 ga fence posts and railings.   Is there an advantage to using a thinner wire and going faster as opposed to thicker slower speed wire.  Right now I have .024, .035, .045..  I also now have tips in all sizes for my Q400 Bernard gun.  I don't have .030 but if someone wants to make a case for that being the perfect wire for this job I am listening..its going to all be 16ga mild steel in all positions, due to the fact that the retaining wall drops a little I am going to mortar the posts in place first then build the railingsTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:As a general rule I use .024 on 16 gauge, I prefer the smaller bead profile I get with it. I like it up through .090 wall thickness then my preference becomes .030 wire, at 3/16 I prefer .035. With that said you can certainly use .035 on it, these just happen to be my preferences.Ken
Reply:I use .030 and .035 depending upon what is in my machine at the time.
Reply:Probably the best solution would be to take some scrap out to the shop and see what works best FOR YOU AND YOUR WELDER.Personally, for me I'd use the little guy (HH187) with .030 wire and C25.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:0.025 or 0.030 or 0.035 solid wire with C25.Run your machine and find out what it and you 'like' for that thickness of metal.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I welded a deer stand made from 16ga material with .030.  I welded an exhaust set with .035 I preferred the .030, but honestly I think it was all in my mind.  I use to weld all thicknesses with a stick.  Once I was brought over to the dark side of welding (mig), I haven't touch a stick for thin unless I have to.

Reply:i would use the 030 since i have it in all my smaller migs. but you said you don't have the 030 so go with the 024. i use nothing less than 035 in my 252 and i sure as heck ain't about to go off roading on the fence line with it.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
