Ok, So not much of a project but lots of pictures ;DToday i had the task of making an adjustment on some structural steel work i did last week, apparently, the existing steel work was out by 100mm so, i had to shorten my beam, which meant cutting off the end plate and web, tried with a 9" cutting disc and grinder, but couldn't get into the corners because of the 10mm web which was supporting the endplate.I was a bit sad to be cutting up my work especially since i made an effort to keep a nice 10mm fillet all round with a few to keeping the welding inspector on site happy.Anyway heres my secret weapon, its a Gouging Nozzle, Some call them offset cutting tips, but whatever they are called it allows me to cut right up close to the Box section and Plate without any damage, Now had i tried to cut with a normal Oxy/Acet tip it would no doubt cut into the box and plateget the flame just right for the cut,Then cut up close to the box and plateI left about 2-3mm so i could just grind flush, I didn't want the risk of damaging the plate or box, You can see the remains of the plate on the floor.You can see that the plate remains undamaged, with just a small couple of mil, of metal to grind and then sand smoothThat Gouging tip is ideal for getting into tight corners where you don't want to damage the main steelwork, Take a look at the Tip along side a normal Oxy/acet tipand the Hole arrangements at the tip
Reply:Ok, so now i need to grind back the metal from the box sectionBeforeAfterThen i used a cutting disk to cut the box to the correct size, now i need to put all my bits backNow the fun Part, Fully welded 8mm min fillet all round, these welds get tested by a welding inspector on site via NDT and hopefully should all passWith the lighting here at the workshop it give a orangey haze to the pictures so earlier when no one was about i took some with the flash enabled on my phone and heres the resultsAll in all took about 2 hours to do the above and i had 4 to do, So now back home having a nice beer to relax with, and very pleased that my new cutting tip worked a treat, will certainly be using that again
Reply:I was thinking you were going to show how you washed out just the beads with that tip and managed to save everything.I haven't had the chance to do much with a gouging tip, but it's on my list to pickup at some point..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I was surprised at the fact that it didn't damage the Plate or the Box Section, I can just imagine what it would look like if i had used a normal cutting nozzle or a plasma cutter |
