Hi, I am looking for some ASME or AWS codes and standards which would apply to welding dissimilar metals. In this case, the two metals in question are 304 SS and aluminum.Thank you!

Reply:Gorilla glue.
Reply:Actually, I'm trying to prove that it WON'T work!!

Reply:you can do it with explosion bonding, saw a documentary on it looks impressive.
Reply:Sounds very interesting but the parts we are talking about are roughly 3'x4'.. I am not sure explosion bonding would be 'safe' in this type of environment, but who knows!!!!!
Reply:how else would you need to prove that it won't work?does someone need to be proven? have them call every welding shop around you and ask.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:The manufacturer is giving us a hard time about their shoddy work. They say it is up to standards, but obviously it's not. I was just trying to have a piece of paper in my hand that says "officially" you can't weld stainless steel and aluminum. We are trying to get them to fix it under warranty. I don't know why they won't!
Reply:Can you provide some images of said weld in question?I doubt that a code would specify that 2 materials cannot be welded together, a code provides guidelines for how a WPS/PQR needs to be performed, tested and documented. If you could design a SS/AL weldment that meets the requirements set fourth by the code body, and the company approves it, the joints would be able to be put in service. The day may come when its possible to do such a thing with conventional welding equipment, however that day is not today, or anytime in the near future I believe. It is possible through explosion welding or some inertia/friction welding processes.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:I have multiple choices for you to consider, give me a call, i can whip it out in no time, i got krazy glue, gorrilla glue, jb weld, two part epoxy, screws, bolts, silver solder, about 30 other types of solder and brazing wires, duct tape, electrical tape, and for a nominal fee ill print out a copy of the "Farm Code".I forgot how to change this. |
