Okay, I have a question and hopefully it makes since. I'm at TWS, Phase 2 wk2, and we are working on vertical Overhead T plates. The thing that gets me is the angles we are working with and the overlap. Can someone tell me if this is right? The colored lines are the approximate rod angles I was told.Last edited by neuralsnafu; 05-09-2014 at 09:33 PM.Reason: left out some information.

Reply:The aprox angles shown are correct. On my first pass, I like to aim my electrode more to the top and pull the puddle down with a slight movement of the electrode. Much like the projected angle you have shown. Gravity and arc force can work for you and against you in this type of weld.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Here is another question regarding overhead. What should the travel angle be?  Pretty close to vertical? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk

Reply:As to the last sketch, if your vertical metal is thinner than the horizontal I tend to direct the rod to the thicker piece. But ya overhead same as flat.... did some 7014 overhead with the same hot settings as flat,,,, it looked Purdy. practice practice practice TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:neuralsnafu Open Question . . .Regardless of rod angle, there is a limit to defying gravity.Stringer order - I need to know?I have always welded overhead fillets by inverting 2-3, and 4-5-6.I weld top to bottom, because of the inherent shoulder provided by gravity.  Top to bottom provides a shallow [sweeter] oblique angle fillet: surface to crest - crest open, and crest to surface.I find this much more controllable then bottom to top, and produces an over-all smoother multi-pass fillet. What am I doing wrong per code?Opus
