Reply:Shop dog, guarding that plate by golly. Good dog. Reply:specopswelderYour third pic looks like 'Okie-Tig' on a pad-eye; what is actually happening in the photo? Is the Tri-Braze AR 300, 400, or 500?Were the 3 ft. extensions all Tri-Brase, or on mild/T-1 structural backing? It's obvious in your photos that the sections were brake-curved. When delivered [raw metal], there should have been evident, and big, 'ink-marker' arrows denoting the grain of the AR.If visible, did the arrows run lengthwise or crosswise to the break-lines?What was your: filler wire, gauge, and did you 'hog it in', or was there a strict welding procedure?I haven't worked heavy equipment since '92, a lot has changed in welding applications since then; of which I'm unaware. My interest is tiny compared to yours, but the materials are the same, or close to it.I'm welding 3/16 AR 400.  My problem is the welds are structural [loaded],and not static, as in cladding.Any help would be welcome.Opus
Reply:Somebody must have had a 10 yard load of gravel to spread?  Cool project!

Reply:Looks like you had a lot of fun working with it!  Great job.
Reply:Very cool pics but I must ask why were you feeding another stick into your arc? Ive heard of that before, but never seen it. I thought it was a joke or a ghetto-rigged way to help incase you screw up your fit and have a big gap."If you ain't making mistakes, it means you aren't learning anything."

Reply:opus. Thanks for the interest .I will try to share my little knowledge on ar plate.  It is ar 500. The plate was sent formed to us by another company that specializes in wear products. The graining you ask about runs across the brake lines. There is less chance of the plate de laminating. Very similar to trying to brake flat bar length ways. it will split because of the long grain structure. it can be done but it has to be higher quality steel......nother story. The welding is all done to a procedure. We use several types of wire or rod depending on the application. this was welded with lincoln 71 a85 1/16 diameter .most rods or wire needs to have a diffusible hydrogen of less than 8 mls of hydrogen per 100 grams of weld metal. 7018 h4r is a perfect choice. pre heat to about 350 and weld the plates down. We also use ss 309 . It holds very well in high stress areas. for your application I would use a dual shield wire. Not solid wire it is very brittle when welded on ar plate. or 7018.The pic of two rods is a pad eye being welded on both sides at one time of two separate machines.
Reply:that's just awesome! Nice work, buddy!
Reply:kolot  the temps during the day now are about 60 or so. had a few down around 40. In the summer the high stays arounf 100 to 110.
Reply:Mick we have a nice shop but cant get the work to it. So My crew has been working in the dirt for the past 16 months. The building in the back ground doesnt have power or a roof its a cheap spot of dirt t work on.....mostly a large wind break. We have a three sided 40' x 30' that we push over some stuff. it is all outside. off engine driven welders and air comps. could basically do all the work in a park if had to
