Here's my situation, 24 years old., married, father of two, working at my job for 3 years now. Steady work. Tons of overtime most the year. Fair pay for the area.  I'm reluctant to leave because I'm comfortable there, and I am one of the go to guys there, and that's a good feelin. I feel like things there are heading south quick, lack of care for the worker, quality is being well over looked lately for quanity... on and on..... so my problem is I have a weld practical and interview Tuesday, and I'm torn. If they can offer what I need, do I leave for the new place? And start from day one again? I hate to throw my seniority out the door and chances at day shift away, but I also don't like the way my current job has shifted. All opinions welcomed. End rant
Reply:Chances of day shift...just how viable is that in your future? Seniority?...union job...if not get ready for a cousin/brother-in-law/ foreman's snot nosed whelp/ hunting buddy/etc. to jump in ahead of you each time you get close enough to smell the move coming. You're 24, and while you have a wife and kids and probably a mortgage to pay down, you are young as far as your work life cycle goes. If the new job offer looks viable (you need to be the judge of that and not listen to anyone else's opinion on that particular matter), you're young enough to not be risking much even if the new job heads south as well. Remember to leave your present employer quietly, respectfully and even if you have to stuff a tack in your shoe...tearfully so they remember you were one of the "go to" guys if you ever need to tuck tail and head back for another go with them...hopefully they'll remember all the good you've done them.Less care for the worker...get ready for a round or two of wage cuts if your present employer is like most. Quantity over quality usually ends up costing jobs...and not for the mental midget bean counter that thought that business plan up! If you don't like the way your present job has shifted you probably will like it even less if your present company does suffer from their short-sighted business model. So, bottom line, if you are in an area that isn't experiencing drastic cutbacks and jobs aren't well nigh impossible to find, I'd venture to say..."Go for it!"Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:I just went through the same kind of deal. Great money plenty of hours etc etc. problem was the owner was more worried about the bottom line and not about employee safety or anything else. So I took a serious pay cut and started over with the union. Now in a couple years my money will even out and I'm on a much better place long term.   Never pass up a chance to better work standings. Go wherever there is more potential for advancement. You have to look at the long run. God knows we won't be able to live off social security when it's time.
Reply:Well I got the job. Gotta take the machinist test tomorrow to earn a bit more start pay, saying goodbye to the old job and hello to the new. Very excited
Reply:Congrats on getting the job. Sometimes change is good. It sounded like you weren't happy anyway. Enjoying what you do is really important. Hope the money and benefits are good. Keep us posted.
Reply:Congrats let us know how it goes. Job happiness to me is key.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Its a fab/machinist/welder/"blackSmith" position, new position in the current contract. The nice part is I get to do something different every day. And its starting rate is exceeding my current job by a significant margin
Reply:I will always take the higher pay. "If you want loyalty, buy a dog." I left Mississippi and 21/hr for Virginia and 27/hr. That, and my baby mama needs me at home. >_>You don't need seniority as a welder. You need experience (and ability). 3 years at one place is good, don't get me wrong. Being the lead man/go to is great as well. But when you have dependents, skill, and your youth (like me), you should go to the highest bidder. Then again not everyone likes to hop around. Either way, congrats brother. I'd like to learn some machining eventually.
