over 20 yrs ago I laid out stairs but my mind is a terrible thing to taste, I forgot, help
Reply:Take a framing square lay it on the stringer put one side on the 7" mark and put the other side on 11" , draw around the square this will give you the tread location .7" rise 11" run ( tread part you walk on ) Or 7"  vertical11" horizontal I hope this helps good luck
Reply:That method is correct however you should divide the total height in inches by 7 and then round up and divide the total height by this number to get your actual rise so that all steps are the same size. M&R JohnsonMiller 180SDLincoln weld pak 180Hobart 250ciMill Lathe
Reply:It's more fun if you make the top rise 1" taller and setup a video camera to catch all the tumblers! Just kidding.... maybe.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Sure, then I have someone to blame it on! GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Hello bobby@fred, I have a few diagrams that might shed a bit of light on the whole stair thing. Unfortunately, when you consider the various codes that cover stair design/fabrication there can be a lot of things to consider for getting a stair right. The main thing though is to have the rise distance between each riser over the course of the stair stringer as close to the same as possible and the run distance from riser to riser as close to the same as well. Staying within a 1/16" isn't out of the realm of possibilities. The stringer angle will also have a lot to do with what the rise/run equation ends up being. Often times there is a 1" hold-back from the nosing of the risers to the upper edge of the stringer(keeps your foot from slipping off the side if things are icy). There is often times a 1" run-past of the back edge of the lower riser when compared to the one above it(helps to keep the front of your foot from slipping over the back edge). I am sure with all of the information that everyone has included that your mind will get back on track and you'll have no trouble with getting stair down once again. Sorry, I couldn't get the attachments to reduce to an acceptable size and still maintain readability. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
