I ran across a angle hand shear in a pawn shop, it's a Roper Whitney #4, 2"x2"x1/4" cap.,w/o handle. The owner didnt know what to ask for it (dont think he knew what it was) and said make a offer. Condition was good, as well as blades. Any you guys got an idea what its worth new or used. Wheres Franz?
Reply:I  have one, I use it to cut angle when I install garage doors. They are hard to come by. I would offer him up to $250 for it. They work very well.
Reply:When I bought mine new about 30 years back, it cost around $275- of course, that included the handle, witch is a piece of hi carbon bar stock about 7 feet long. That handle will make you tired of 2 things right quick, 1, gettin hit in the head cause some dipstick didn't properly secure it, and 2, pullin on it.  I put a 4" air cylinder on mine. They're real handy, IF you have use for them.Check the blades over, they generally crack at the mounting holes when the shear is improperly adjusted.  A set of blades has 4 cutting edges on them so pulling the blades will tell you how used the shear is.It should also have an adjustable shelf on it that threads into the side of the shear to prevent blade damage, with a 5/8 adjustment screw runnin thru the shelf.  Without that, you'll brake blades. If you have use for the thing, offer the guy $50- and see how he flinches.  If it ain't all there, offer him $20-.  CRS bar stock won't last as a handle, and the end of the handle has to be tapered to properly index the cutter.  The jaws should be tight enough that you can barely move the mechanism without the handle. That one was probably stolen off the back bumper of a sign truck belonging to either CocaCola or Pepsi.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Thanks Franz & Scott for the info. Franz if I get it, maybe you can tell me how to rig it w/ hydraulic or air. BTW, any idea what a handle of H.C. bar stock would cost? Thanks again.
Reply:If you bought the handle from Whitney it would probably cost you $75-If I remember tomorrow, I'll look at mine, assuming it's exactly where I remember it being, and get some exact dimensions.  If you're planning to set the shear up in a shop, you could probably use 1.5" pipe with an insert for a handle.  If you're planning on it being "portable" you'll need to bolt it to a 10" wide plank about 6 feet long. They are handy as hell if you have a lot of angle to cut.  There is some distortion at the end of the angle when it snaps off, but that is easily correctable with a BFH.I believe I posted Whitney's link on here a couple weeks back when we were on the subject of punches.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Franz,I would be very interested in seeing a photo of your angle iron shear with your hydraulic modification along with any parts or source list you would be willing to offer. I have often wondered if there was a possibility of going hydraulic with this shear. With my limited garage space it is sometimes hard to find enough free area to pull that 6 foot handle down without hitting something with it. I also have the angle iron notcher and bender, but did not get the stand that is made to bolt all 3 tools on. This sometimes makes it difficult to find or come up with a solid mounting surface. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated..................thanks
Reply:Here  are a few pictures of mine. The handle is a piece of 1/2"x2"x3' with a slight taper where it slides into the cutter. Attached Images
Reply:Close up of handle connection. Attached Images
Reply:Well, guys I got the shear, $30 bucks out the door . My brother negotiated the deal in Atlanta where I spoted it several weeks ago on a trip. Big discussion about what this "thing" would do, everything but angle iron Franz, looks like they "aint all there". Scott S if your looking could you post a pic from the other side of your # 4 ? Thanks
Reply:Widetrack, what are you missing? There are 3 blades, 2 fixed that are held in by flathead screws and 1 moving. There should also be a 3/4 threaded hole from the other side, below the slot, where you put the support that prevents the angle from tipping in the cutter.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-

Reply:I'll take a picture of the other side this afternoon.
