Here is a anvil I made out of high carbon railroad track.  Just for small project and i always wanted to make one.Added some character to it with a torch.  Its been heat treated and annealed so I shouldnt never have any trouble out of it.
Reply:That looks sharp, good job
Reply:thanks alot, not too bad for oxy fuel torch and a grinder and file if I do say so myself
Reply:Looks nice.
Reply:thanks forhire
Reply:Looks great. I need to do that. I have never measured the height of a RR track they seem bigger in all the pictures (Its been year since i walked on RR tracks)Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Thanks, These are pretty big tracks that I used, I know there are a couple different sizes of tracks depending on what size trains or location like factorys and such
Reply:Very nice anvil !!.... you should add it to the RR track anvil thread.... What process did you use to heat treat it ??Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:Thanks travis i thought they were all the same size.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:RR tracks are constantly being upgraded. They are rated by Lbs per foot. I think the new rails are 140Lbs per foot now. The heavier track is obviously taller. I have access to a gazillion pieces of cut track that are perfect size for these anvils. Too bad shipping would cost so much. Reply:Travis, did you cut away the steel to form the horn with a grinder or O/A?Good looking project, BTW
Reply:I cut a vague angles out with a oxy fuel and grinded the horn into shape and then used a 7018 rods to run some beads to build back metal up where i wanted the horn a little thicker.I cut the square hardy hole in the back with oxy-fuel but I need to go back and dress it some with a file to make its final shape  I also built up the step on the "flat" part of the anvil with 7018 and ground it flat.  Finally i sanded everything I grinded with a flap disk and a 100 grit sanding disk.  The anvil was also heat treated and tempered to ensure the right hardness, but it didnt have to be done that way Ive seen plenty of ppl use plain jain railroad track and have good results.Last edited by travisbaker; 12-14-2012 at 09:13 PM.
Reply:Joker11- man I wished I lived closer I would love to have a nice stock of rail road track pieces.  They can come in handy on a bunch of things
Reply:RR tracks are rated on "Pounds per Yard".........Either way......its still heavy stuff. Very nice looking job!!Last edited by Timmer; 12-14-2012 at 09:45 PM.
