i was replacing the guide rails on a cell door locking device using some cold-rolled half round and just happened to remember some 2" scrap copper pipe near the plumbing shop and got an idea for another belt buckle. i cut a short length of flat stainless steel then mitered the half round to 45 deg and welded it. i then slit and flattened the copper pipe and cut a small coupon to fit over the opening on the flat side of the h.r. and sliver soldered it and 3 brass nuts to it. instead of bending a welding rod for the belt loop i cut and silver soldered it as well. now i'm looking for some way to get a greenish patina on the copper. any suggestions? sorry for the crappy pics. Reply:Spray the copper with some salty water to get the green patina. I haven't tried it with copper, but the brass oil coolers I polished in the US Navy would turn green when sprayed with seawater, in a matter of hours. This would probably do the same for copper, see what happened to the Statue of Liberty, that has a copper cladding and is exposed to seawater spray?. If you have easy access to seawater, try it first. You may have do do it for a couple of days to get what you want, but give it some time and make sure there are no protective coatings on the copper. Send me a PM if you are going to send me the buckle for being the first one to give you this tip, and I will provide you with the shipping address. Nice work.Last edited by Bistineau; 12-22-2012 at 06:00 PM.
