I'm about to weld some 6061 grade alum round rod to the bottom of my Sea Ark boat which is 5052 grade. What filler grade rod should I use? I'm thinking 5356. I am welding 3/8 solid rod to the ribs on the bottom of my comm fishing boat to protect it when I pull up on the ramp or rocks. I am also in the process of cutting out and welding in a tread plate floor. The local metal shop has 3000 grade tread plate. Since the floor is the 3000 grade I'm thinking 3/16 rather than 1/8 thickness. I'm hoping they will be able to order me 5052 grade tread plate but in case they cannot get it I will go with the 3000 series. What filler rod should I use to merge the 3000 to the 5000? Thanks a bunch. I bought a 2007 Sea Ark 2472 for a song. It needs some repairs but over all a good project boat for me to play with. Thanks NetmanLincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argon
Reply:I would use 5356 or 5183 for all of it since it a high strength filler. Last thing you need is the the weld to crack right down the center of the weld. It is not worth the risk to me to use soft stuff. 5356 is more ductile than 4043.I only use 4043 if a part is a filthy cast, high service temps, or gonna be chem filmed as final finish.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
