hey im new to site. im an ironworker by trade and through that ive done alot of welding. Had a job to weld some galvanized and was looking to see which rod was best. looks like most guys use 6010 or 11 which we dont use. but we used 7014 and it worked pretty good( you had to whip it). started with 5/32 but it was to much heat for verts so we went with a 3/32 and that worked pretty good, the shop was out of 1/8. Just wondering if anyone else has used 7014 and how it compared to the 60 rods.
Reply:Myself I like 6010 , but the big precast erectors use 7016.
Reply:Dealing with this crap right now, that needs a smoothe finish. Almost wishing I left this one to someone else. Peeeeew!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:that gass off the galvanized steel will kill you
Reply:I've used 7014 a lot, but I've not used it for galvanized. I like it's easy welding and restart characteristics. I just have to remember to run hot amperage on inside corners or it's easy to trap slag.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Just wear a respirator. The 3M half-masks with P100-series particulate filters work well and will fit under your hood. I have welded galvanized fence posts and unistrut using the 3M half mask with 2091 P100 series filters with no ill effects. As far as the type of electrode, I used Lincoln 5P; burns right through the galvanization as if it is not there.Mike
Reply:i dont recall ever using a stick machine on galvi. but when i need to weld on it i use my wire feeder with flux core (inner shield) wire .045Lincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R

Reply:One thing to watch out is to make sure something is galvanized and not cadmium coated! Cadmium fumes are very toxic.I think some small hardware items such as some bolts, nuts, hooks, etc. may be cadmium and not zinc.Ken

Reply:I'm an Ironworker too and my favorite jobs are pre-cast parking garages. We use 7016 without any problems. If you grind of the zinc for every connection that would more than double the man-hours and the contractors would go broke. Use a small squirel box fan to blow the smoke away from you. 7016 is the way to go. |
