Hello, I am new here and I am not a welder. I am a manufacturing engineer and I do cost analysis. I have a quote request from a customer who is asking if my company can braze a Port Boss (3/8-18) nut to 1006-1008 material. We do some brazing here but not a lot. Mostly mig, tig, and robot welds. The notes on the print say that once the nut is welded to the housing it must be leak proof to 150 P.S.I and also withstand a 100 Ft-Lbs of torque without breaking out of the housing. The nuts will be welded to a pressure housing and there is some division here about whether or not brazing will be able to withstand the required tests. I am hoping someone here can give me some more insight. Please let me know if I need to give you any more information. Thanks!
Reply:Nichole,Depends, is the joint design suitable for brazing?   What material is the Port Boss made from?   Not saying a brazed joint might not be suitable but if it were me that had the responsibility for insuring it met the design criteria and was fit for it's intended purpose I think I'd have to do a few test joints with the brazing process and then destructively test them to insure they meet the criteria called out on the print.   Basically do a proof test that your brazing procedure gives you the results that are required. The other big question is how many of them do you have to do?  That could be an important factor in a cost analysis of which process (welding or brazing) it would be most economical to use. Also, if you're customer is asking about "brazing" and the print is talking about or showing "welding" you better get that bit of ambiguity / confusion cleared up with them.   I know the final goal here is to please the customer and make money but some times the "customer" doesn't always know what the best way to go about accomplishing some thing is.I'd also recommend you take a trip out on to the shop floor and talk to some of the people that would actually be doing the welding or brazing if you would get the job, show them the print and get their in put.
Reply:Yes, better get it crystal clear about what the customer actually thinks they want.I have met people who think the terms "welding" and "brazing" are just different ways of saying the same thing.I have also met people who think that any type of joining together using an oxy-acetylene torch is "brazing".
Reply:I would say if its dissimilar metals and can't be welded then you should braze it instead. I don't see any other benefit from brazing except for less skill is involved
Reply:Destructive proof testing is a very good CYA technique for many things. Consuming some material in testing in testing is nothing if it averts injury, death, or lawsuit.

If the particular bung has a large amount of surface area in contact with the vessel, then brazing would be used, if not, then fillet brazing or braze welding would be used. If the customer wants brazing, then the bung design will dictate the process and brazing material used. The volume of parts and bung material will dictate how they are fluxed, and with what flux. Definitely more information is needed.
Reply:"Slopping spelter" is not the same as "sloppy speller".............is it?
