Hello Everyone,    I recently bought a Porter Cable 6" variable speed Bench grinder and decided to make a stand for it out of some pieces of 6" pipe I had laying around, along with some round tubing, square tubing and some flat stock.  Everything was Mig welded with my xmt300 and suitcase .035 wire. The grinder is bolted down through the 1" square tubing cross members at the top through holes I drilled by hand. Left the rubber mounts in place against the tubing.  Nothing spectacular but a practical stand for my grinder to get it off my table to allow for more work space.  Next week I will add a set of wheels to roll it around the shop. Thinking about a dolly type set up where I will lean it back and the wheels will set down.  I made 3 floor adjusters with locking studs out of flat stock so that it will sit level anywhere in the shop. Going to grind all the rust and paint it next week also.  Criticisms are welcome. Thanks. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year-MillerManJohnny Attached ImagesLast edited by MillerManJohnny; 12-30-2012 at 07:09 PM.-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC  Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln  Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield

Reply:a1998z3,Thank You. Will take some better pics tomorrow of the base. Those photos were taken on my phone. I will have to get the Digital camera out tomorrow for a more detailed view.-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC  Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln  Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield
Reply:This will be one of my next projects, I have a craftsman bench grinder I picked up at the local flea market and it needs to be on a stand too.  I like the tabs with the bolts in them for leveling, the wheel idea is good too, I built one a long time ago for my Dad, it was a spare doughnut car rim w/tire, it worked pretty good, well it still works good, he just leans it to one side and rolls it where ever he wants it.  I have never thought about putting pipe together like that to make a base, the one on the front would be cool if it were cut at a 45 and then you could put water to quinch with and when you lean it back on the wheels, it won't spill, then put tools (old vise grips) or something in the others, maybe with lids or not.  One more idea, you could put some small rod stock about 3" or so long, bent at 90's and welded to the sides of the post under the grinder so if you do move/store it you can wrap the cord and it won't be just thrown up on top of the grinder. Take some pics, I would like to see this thing in better detail and see how you finish it."YOU GOING TO JAIL NOW...YOU GOING TO JAIL,POW!!!"  -{the cleveland busdriver}-
Reply:Oh, I forgot to mention when I suggested maybe cutting the front pipe at a 45, to do that you would unbolt the grinder spin it 180 and mount it that way, the way I see it (in my mind) it seems it would be more stable with the single pipe to the front with a pc of angle or something to step on and the two in the back would keep it from wanting to tilt to the side or at a backward/side movement (if you will), because normally the pressure is always pushing towards the grinder, wanting to "tilt" it back. Also, sometimes grinders on stands that are not bolted down seem to want to walk around a little from vibration, the step added to the front would hold it still and you would'nt have to hold it with your hand.  Just sayin, its your stand, do it your way, but def take some pics and show us the results."YOU GOING TO JAIL NOW...YOU GOING TO JAIL,POW!!!"  -{the cleveland busdriver}-
Reply:Thanks bus driver but it does not walk or vibrate at all . im not quite understanding your idea of cutting the pipe at a 45.-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC  Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln  Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield

Reply:Ok I gotcha now that is a good idea . I don't have a bandsaw or anything so i would have to burn it. but thanks for the idea. will definitely look at it. I may put a little more work into it such as square off the ends of the tubing at the top . etc.-MMJMiller PRO 300 CC/CV MitsubishiMiller Big Blue 502D CC/CV DeutzMiller XMT300Miller Suitcase 12RC  Lincoln Invertec V310 ACLincoln  Power Mig 250Lots and Lots of Dual Shield
