Ok so i haven't had time to set up my welder(dynasty 200dx) even tho I have most everything now. Right now I'm looking into setting up my power cord. Im going to be using single phase power only and I will be looking at a adding a 50ft extension. I want to use some of those twist lock connectors that i keep seeing so i can change from 120 to 230. Am I correct going with 10-3 soow or should I step it up some more? If I'm building this cable wrong please let me know what to change.Im starting from scratch and would like to do it right the first time. All help is greatly appreciated.Learning the ropes....
Reply:Looks like at 230v input it draws 15.3 amps at rated load. 10 gauge is fine.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:If you want a twist lock plug look up NEMA L14-30 which is a 30 amp plug set.Or an L14-20, which is a 20amp plug set. Only problem is I dont think all L14-20 plug sets will accept 10/3 cord. How much amperage does that machine draw in 110v mode?Good news is L14-20 and L14-30 are usually fairly close in price.I recomend L14-30. I am in the process of changing most of my 30 amp 3 prong stuff over to L14-30 four prong.I have built the cords, now just need to install the L14-30 receptacles.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:Visual aid.Yeah I know its got a 10-50r. That is for my plasma cutter which will keep its 3 prong and my buzz box. With the buzz box I know if I keep it to the 145 amp setting or less it wont use much if any thing over 30 amps. And yes it does have 5-20s, those are for my little 110v stick welder which needs up to a deticated 30 amp circuit. Reply:True ofmyou are only wiring for 230v. That would make black and white "hot" and green to neutral. If you also want 110v you need an additional conductor for ground.I suggest using 10/4. 230v = black and red "hot", white "neutral", and green "ground". 110v = black "hot", white "neutral, and green "ground".Sorry for my earlier confusion. Reply:I will be plugging into a dryer outlet at times when dealing with thicker material and using the (110/120?) traditional wall outlet when working with thin stainless. So I can just make a pigtail at the end to swap out the plug correct?Last edited by superchargedv8; 06-06-2014 at 07:59 PM.Learning the ropes....

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWSuperchargedv8, I think there may be some confusion in what some of the other posters think you are trying to accomplish. Let me see if I understand what you want to do...You want to set up a 50 foot long twist lock extension cord to power your Dynasty 200. To do so you are going to put the male twist lock on the Dynasty. At the far end, you are going to make a bunch of "adapters", one end having a female twist lock that you can either plug into your Dynasty direct, or into the 50 ft extension cord. You'll set up one adapter to fit your 220v dryer outlet, and one adapter to fit a standard 110v outlet. You aren't planning to power anything else.If I am correct, your setup is very similar to what I have rigged for my Maxstar 200. Only in my case, I have my standard 50 amp 220v plug on the machine, and then made an adapter to 110v. In the shop I can either plug in direct, or use my 25ft 220v extension cord. Elsewhere, I can use the 110v adapter and a standard 110v extension cord. I also have an adapter that allows me to plug into the 20 amp 220v connection on my genset if I need to run that. In that case, I've rigged up that adapter so I can use my standard 10 ga 110v extension cord, since I seldom need to use this adapter and didn't want a specialized extension cord I'd have to drag around only when I needed to run the genny. If you are doing the same thing I am, you will not need a 4th wire. The autolink in the Dynasty will sense what the incoming voltage is and set the machine correct. To wire things up correct, green is always ground. Black is always hot. However the machine uses the white lead as both hot in 220v mode, and neutral when running off 110v power. The manual should show this clearly if I remember the one for my Maxstar which should be wired the same as your Dynasty.  I can't remember 100% off the top of my head, but the red wire from the machine is for 3 phase only and is never used for single phase. You either cut it flush at the plug, or tape it off.
Reply:I thought about setting mine up with the 110v plug on the machine, and use an adapter to go to 220v. However I occasionally work with others. I wanted to make sure some knucklehead didn't try to plug in a 110v item into a 220v outlet using the adapter for whatever reason. (twist locks would have been one way to help prevent that, but I don't use twist locks on anything else) By wiring the machine to 220, I "idiot proofed" the system. At worse if someone tried to plug in a 220v item into a 110v outlet, all they get is nothing. If I remember when I stop by the shop tomorrow night, I'll shoot a pict of the cord and the temporary adapter that I know I can lay my hands on right away. I'd have to dig out the "normal" one I usually use, but I know right where the "spare" one is that I set up initially to test the machine using spare parts..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:madwelder is running 4 wires because; The 10-50R requires the "Black, Red and Green"The 5-20's require the "Black, White and Green"Till DSW came along I was slightly confused as to why 3 wires were enough for the OP.Thanks for the interesting Thread!
Reply:Actually the 10-50r has a "neutral/ground" it is a current carrier so it gets the white wire. My buzz box has 2 light bulbs, power factor correction capacitors and a fan running on L to N power. Thats one of the reasons I went with a 10-50p over a 6-50p.On my new 4 wire setup the metal enclosure its self, the 5-20r and L shape prong on the L14-30r use the green wire. The NEMA 6-50 common welding p and r set uses a ground, or the green wire. The round prong on a 6-50 welding plug should see virtually no current flow during normal operation unless there is a fault.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welderOriginally Posted by mad welder 4Is the 4 wire clothes dryer plug going to be your only 220v power source?
Reply:Yes you can do that.Sounds like you need a 14-30 to 6-50 adaptor or lop off the 6-50 cord your machine came with and splice in a 14-30 cord and plug set.I am not real fond of 6-50 since no homes have them, basically if you want a 6-50 you have to have it installed, or use your welder at an actual welding, industrial or machine shop.I think most people would be better served by a machine with a clothes dryer plug if its a 30 amp machine or electric range plug if its a 50 amp machine. We get a lot of posts on here where some one buys a machine, they take a picture of the 6-50 plug it comes with and say they dont have any where to plug it in and ask what to do.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
