Wanted to make something today so I made some dice. All out of 11gauge. The base is 11g top and 1/8" sides. Great little project for outside corner joints. Spent a crap ton of time with a flap wheel grinding it. And I eye balled the holes as you can tell. The base I did yesterday and the 2 dice took me a long time today, probably the better part of 4 or 5 hours. The blade on the portaband cracked in 2. So I used the blade runner and tried using the plasma cutter. I never realized how much I love my little harbor freight porta band and how often I use it.Side by sideDebating if I should stack them like this and weld them together and then to the base and just make it a decorative piece for the garage or something.Still have a little more clean up to do on the edges. And was playing with square tube and some 22* angle. Not sure what I'm going to do with this, but it was good to play with angles. I learned a lot. And I learned how much I dislike my chop saw. Thinking about putting some round stock in the center and turning it into a picture frame if I can make a picture spin. And with some old aluminum I had sitting around I made a catch can for a honda. Probably going to put it on ebay. Learned something here. Old aluminum that has been sitting around for a month needs to be cleaned very very well. When I first ordered this stuff it welded up perfectly. But after sitting around, and then welding it; all the crap floated to the top. A coat of paint and it will be perfectly good.Last edited by Gamble; 12-23-2012 at 09:58 PM.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Nice work, I like the octagon too.
Reply:I can't decide with the octagon turn it into a picture frame or drill a hole at the bottom and top and turn it into a lamp. I ground down all the outside welds so I just need to figure out what to do with it and finish it. And paint it. Wish i still had my powder coating machine and oven.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:You fit up looks very nice, especially if it was all cut with a portaband. You welds still need some work though. You really need to work on your consistency. Your dip spacing needs more work. Are you doing this all freehand, or are you resting your torch hand on something to steady yourself as you go? Top edge of the outside corner looks fairly nice, but the dips all look large and somewhat cold to me, What does the inside edge look like? If you aren't getting full penetration and burning down that bottom of the V, then I'd say you are running a bit to cold on your amps and need to turn it up slightly..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Fit up was great. Cut the sides on the horizontal/vertical bandsaw and the top/bottom was free hand on the portaband. My hands have gotten a lot more steady with cutting over the past year or so. I used to be horrible at it. It's the harbor freight porta band and the blade that came with it. I built a stand and it has a slight wobble so I use a C clamp to my table.I had my torch hand resting against the side of the table. Was only running about 70-75 amps, (so ya a little cold I think) 2%lanthanted tungsten, gas lens and I think 15cfh. I don't touch the argon flow unless I open or close the valve. And 1/16th ER70s-2 wire. Here is an inside of one of the corners.I was trying to use lower amps and move slow to avoid undercutting the top. I have material cut to make another base/stand so I'll get better pics when I tack and weld it up. And for some reason my steel welds aren't that great, but on aluminum I'm pretty uniform. Maybe because I just move faster and don't think as much.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Was playing around today and added another 2 pieces. This took a lot of time and thought and helped me learn how important it is to have EXACTLY the same lengths (then add in how much the part will shrink) so one side came out ok and the other came out a little short. Overall a great learning experience thus far and for what $20 in bar stock and some scrap and $6 for a light kit.I have to think if I want a shade on it of some sort. Ideas/thoughts are welcome.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Light colored canvas/fabric with metal snaps would look cool.

Reply:Iv'e got roasted here for stateing my opinions on auto dark helmets, but now do you see what i'm talking about. I rarely use them for just that reason. I weld for a living and do a lot of side work and cannot afford to have a situation like that stop me from finishing a job. Once you get used to a fixed shade there is no reason to go back to a auto dark. Just my opinion, but they will give you a false security of knowing what your doing until they fail on you. If you have a fixed shade alternate with them so your always prepared bud. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I very much see your point and it would be worth it to have one for when things like this happen. I did manage though, I probably should have tried out my jackson helmet or my kobalt helmet. Figure maybe the cheap kobalt with 1 or 2 sensors would work better, I don't know, just a thought. Maybe next time I'll try it.Well this is done for now. Welded the bottom pieces together then onto the lamp. Used a flap wheel to smooth out all the outside and side welds. The inside ones will be staying just as they are. Some are looking great and some are meh. A little more grinding tomorrow to smooth it all out and it should be good. Just need an idea on what color to paint it.
