Propane Shootout

Did some scrapping this weekend, actually gotta do more today.  So I decided to use propane for the first time to cut some metal.   Usually just use it for the large rosebuds.Cut up some stuff with both gasesThe propane handled the 1/2" plate with ease, and less slag.  I don't like the slow preheat, but it's not a deal killer.  Lighting the stupid torch is different   Little more finicky to get it adjusted, but after a few tries it's pretty routine.  I was running a Victor "0" tip with 350 series regulators, and a model 370 handle (if I remember the number).  It seems to work out ok, and it's cheaper than acetyleneI do like the Victor tip, you can stand off further from the metal than with a Harris tip.  Saves a lot cleaning time on the tip."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:You want to keep the tip a LOT higher with LP than with acetylene. The hottest part of a propane flame is way out from the tips of the preheat cones, unlike with acetylene.metalmagpie

Half a dozen wet welding rods and some old ructy scrap and someone would buy it That being said I too switch between acet and propane at times. Reply:We used propane on the farm for probably 30 years, just for kicks I tried a tank of mapp gas. WAY better, propane is cheap but found we used bout twice the oxy to get the cut. now with mapp running much better, and still cheaper than acet. however once we get to the bottom of this tank, then we will see what diff in $$$ is. But it runs much hotter, cuts nicer.  Propane was great when oxy was cheap, not so much anymore.

Reply:I use Propylene, acetylene is dinosaur gas. I don't weld with my torch so I like the low cost and versatility of LP based fuel gasses. Oxy is cheap, so it dosent hurt my feelings that I use more. It is all relative I guess.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
