Reply:When zinc vapor mixes with the oxygen in the air, it reacts instantly to become zinc oxide. This is the same white powder that you see on some noses at the beach and the slopes. Zinc oxide is non-toxic and non carcinogenic. Extensive research(1) into the effects of zinc oxide fumes has been done, and although breathing those fumes will cause welders to think that they have the flu in a bad way, there are no long-term health effects.

Reply:So welding stainless steel is hazardous too?Chromium[4] is also a hazard, from stainless steel.
Reply:Yes welding stainless is hazardous. Look up stainless and hexavalient chromium. There is all sorts of info out there. You should wear a supplied air respirator. In ny your technically supposed to have a special hepa filtration system if your welding stainless, or you can be fined big $. But all 4 or the systems we have have failed every efficiency test they have had, oh I'd say 6 times now.Miller bobcat 225g  - spoolmatic 1Mm250 - 30a spoolMiller spectrum 375Thermal arc 95 Everlast Ex 250As the boiler turns, these are the days of our lives
Reply:Ps. Not saying you don't, but make sure you have the correct cartridges in your respirator. You need fume rated cartridges. Weari g a respirator with the incorrect cartridge is just as bad as not having one on at all. Reply:Respect to Flexal for listening and acting. I hand a North brand welders "backpack". Filters are hanging of your back, out of the direct fumes so you get more filter life. Always get the filters that filter out as much as possible. For the 2 bucks more, why not. Reply:Originally Posted by DSWOne of the biggest problems with respirators is ill fitting masks. Facial hair will not allow a mask to seal right most times. Also masks are not a one size fits all type of thing. You really need to get fitted, and know how to fit a mask ( or get fitted by someone who does) to make the most of these. Some faces simply don't seal well with masks.Where I used to work PT, I got sent out with one of the techs to do a service call at a chemical plant. 1st thing we had to do was get fitted for a respirator before we could go on site. They handed him a razor since he had a full beard and pointed him at the rest room to shave it off, or he wasn't coming in or getting fitted.

Reply:From the look of the pile of metal in the video it looks like you just may have cut up the dumpster and brought it home.
Reply:Fex, if you lived closer I could keep you over whelmed with good scrap. You can't imagine how much good steel and other stuff our company throws out. Our rolling stock shop is kinda separate from the rest of the plant and we go dumpster diving on the main plants dumpster to pull just the aluminum, copper & brass to recycle separately. So far with the funds we've bought for our shop, a Milwaukee mag base, Wilton upright drill press, 2) 9 piece DeWalt cordless sets, Milwaukee metal saw, Miller Extreme 12 VS, 4 Digital Elite hoods, 2 Stronghand corner clamps, 6 Stronghand welding magnets, Snapon 1/4" cordless screwdriver, Milwaukee portaband, 2 Snapon torque wrenches, 3 Blue Point rechargeable LED work lights and I'm probably missing some stuff. Reply:So I know this is an old thread and all,,. but this question seems to come up a lot on this forum. I sure would like to know the truth about long-term health affects. Acourtjester's statement is just copy and pasted from an article written by Sperko Engineering, portions of which were published in "The Fabricator", March, 1997: http://www.sperkoengineering.com/htm...Galvanized.pdf ... the [1] in his post is a footnote referencing a peer reviewed journal: "Walsh, Sandstead, Prasad, Newberne and Fraker, Environmental Health Perspectives, Volume 102, Supplement 2, June 1994, 5-46.  Provides summary plus 471 references." 471 references is a lot...The rest of the paragraph in that article is also very interesting and worth taking the time to read. More from the American Welding Society which I consider to be a fairly legit source: http://www.aws.org/technical/facts/FACT-25.pdf• Metal Fume Fever is the result of over exposure to zinc fumes from welding, cutting, or brazing on galvanized steel.• Metal Fume Fever is a short–term illness with classic flu–like symptoms.• The permissible exposure limit (PEL) according to OSHA is 5 milligrams of zinc oxide fume per cubic meter of air––always monitor and measure your breathing air.• To avoid the illness, keep your head out of the fumes and do not breathe the fumes. Use enough proper ventilation and/or exhaust. If uncertain about the ventilation, use an approved respirator.• There are no known long–term effects of this disease.Anyway,I think I am convinced that "metal fume fever" is nasty stuff and I sure don't want to get it, but if I do, I don't have to worry about long term health effects. I am willing and open to reading other articles...just please don't point me to anvilfire.com or any other "case studies". Way more interested in science and peer reviewed journal articles.Last edited by takirc02; 01-19-2013 at 07:55 PM.
