Well I'm bored now and I'd like to try adding roughly .010 to my valves on a briggs motor I have so they'll be within clearance again. I have the tools to reshape them once extended I'm just curious if anyone has any particular rod or wire they'd use. I'd like to stick with my hobart handler 140 bit if I have I stick it I will. Reply:Typically, when the clearance needs to be reduced on that style valve train (Briggs L-head) you cut the valve seat with a cutter, and to increase the valve clearance, you grind some material off the end of the valve stem.
Reply:I don't have a valve seat cutter/grinder I'd like to cut the seats so I know my sealing surface is new. But I can't find the tool that the briggs manual specifies to useSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I have not worked on an L head, the the earlier briggs motors I had with the easy start leave the intake valve open way too long to relieve compression for easy starting. If you ground the valve stem down so that it was closed when the piston started going up, you had a lot more power and better fuel consumption. You might take a look at your valve timing and see if fixing yours will help you or hurt you. They are quite a bit more difficult to pull start afterward though.
Reply:I am sure if you took the block to an engine shop you could have the valves and seats done for a very reasonable price. By the time you grind the valve and seat you might get your .010". I would not weld the stem. How did the gap get to big any way. If you were close I could fix you right up. I use a Nu-way seat cutter and an old Black & Decker valve grinder. Reply:The seats just need to be bumped with a stone, .010 no problem. If you weld the valve stem tip it will shortly self destruct.
Reply:I'm assuming the excess clearance is from wear and tear I did just replace the crank and bearings as well as piston and rings. The valves were lapped in and I never checked clearance before I put it together for good which I should have. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Can't remember, do they use lash caps on those valves?
Reply:They don't have them now. I couldn't tell you if they use themSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
