I was at the scrap yard and picked up an 80lb piece of 3/8 inch steel that was obviously part of a building at one time.I only needed 3/8 mild steel but figured this would work. When I saw it I thought it might be A36, maybe. I fired up my miller spectrum 625 to cut away the unwanted rough edges and noticed the sparks seemed a little different and the plasma seemed to cut a little slower than if it were mild steel. So I dont think its plain old boring mild steel.Best thing to weld structural to its self is 7018 all the way, got plenty of dry excaubur, up to 5/32 in ammo cans. How about structural to mild? About the only electrodes I dont have much of are 6010 or anything stronger than 70xx, aside from hardfacing rod, no 6022, 7028, 7010.I am thinking cut out approximately a 45° fillet grove, open root (3/32), with a toe of up to 1/8. Root pass with CO2 shielded L-56 wire to warm it up then I think 2 passes with a 5/32 inch 7018 rod.For now I only have 3/8 structural and plan on welding it to 1/4 inch mild steel for this little project.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:A welding table maybe?
Reply:@ mad welder 4 - A36 is the most common hot-rolled mild steel.  Not sure what you mean by saying "plain old boring"?  A36 HRS is a performance spec, while 1018CRS is a composition spec.  A36, with a lower Fy and higher carbon content, will bend easier than 1018CR but may have areas of varying hardness. What exactly is your concern and your application?"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:we use a36 for all our non code carbon material at work. what is the application you are using it for? 5/32 and 1/4 material seems excessive. I wouldnt put too much thought into it. Just run some 7018 and go for it.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:I will use it for trailer parts, hitches, hangers, mounts.First project a 3 inch rise trailer hitch. The ones at lowes are made with 1/8 inch thick 2 inch square that looks like a butt joint was welded with a 110v powered HF gmaw machine.Lowes doesn't carry a 3 inch riser, but tractor supply does and they look even worse. Seems like these things get thinner and lighter every year and I dont think its because they are using better steel and electrode. Obviously 3/8 isn't thick enough so it will be doubled up. First layer will be welded to the 1/4 inch thick 2 inch square mild steel, then the second layer added next. Then weld the gap around the 2 pieces with something like 7024. My mechanical engineer says he likes multi layer laminates. There is a 2 foot by 2 foot 3/4 inch thick plate there with 1 inch holes evenly spaced apart. I will grab that and make it into another welding table. Might be part of a building kit.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:A-36 is mild steel weld with anything , all welds are stronger than base metal .
Reply:3/8" isn't thick enough for a riser hitch? Wow, what are you pulling? Why bring 7024 into the equation? I'd be using 7018 for everything, especially when it comes to trailer components.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:The threaded portion of the ball coupler wont allow you to tighten the nut down on anything thinner than about a half inch.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:I went to lowes, tractor supply and wall mart this week one of my side missions was to inspect the welded trailer hitches. I have been able to determine they were welded with various process mostly gmaw, likely due to it being prettiest. Beyond that I found that a few similarities became apparent, weld joints on all appeared to be butt welded, no fillet groves used, closed root, 2 inch square tube was never thicker than 3/16 inch. Anyone who gives a beaver's dam can do better than that.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:Gage metal tubing cheep hard wire mig co2 maybe 2 lb of weld in half hour of weld time, you cannot build your own as cheap as they do! Bet 2 hrs to build em Mexican s at work.
Reply:I agree, no weld prep, no wasting time grinding fillet groves, no setting up a proper toe, no tacking up a proper root gap saves a ton of time.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
