Has anyone tried the newer (and small) plasma cutters with a built in compressor?  Such as the Miller spectrum_125c, Thermodyne has a similar model.  They are compact, use house-hold power volatage and cut (supposedly) 1/4 to 3/8th steel.I asked at my local Miller supplier, they felt that the compressors were not any good and recommended a cutter with a separate compressor or compressed air tanks.  (They are a gas dealer company).  I just need a machine for home-based work, light weight, and do not already have a compressor.I'd be interested in any feedback or comments.  Thanks.
Reply:My personal take on this is: Seperate is better. If the internal compressor goes, what have you got? Also, ANY shop no matter how small would benefit by having a compressor. It will open up a whole world of options for you in tools, cleaning, spraying, tires, toy inflation, etc.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:Thanks for the feedback TESSDAD.  What size compressor would be a good starting system?
Reply:as far as compressors are concerned, I use a Campbell Hausfeld compressor (inexpensive consumer model), just a small VS6231.  I use it with the powcon starcut (80 amp, 60-90 psi).  It comes on often when I do a lot of cutting, but it handles it.  I have cut several continuous feet of 1/2 plate without a problem.  I would recomend a oil-lubricated compressor, not the oil-free ones if noise is an issue at all.  Get a big tank if you have room to reduce the cycling of the compressor.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Great info, thanks.
Reply:Do a search for air compressors, there have been lots of discussions. I would recommend one with the highest cfm rating you can afford. Its like buying a welder, you will always want more! I have a champion R15 pump run by a 5hp baldor motor on an 80 gal. tank. I never thought I would get into sandblasting, but now that I work with metal so much, its nice to have a pump that doesn't run constantly. Also, some people run two compressors wired in series. That means that one runs for low cfm consumption, and the second kicks in for high volume. I have been noticing alot of high cfm pumps on ebay in the 200-500 region. Happy hunting!
